Description :

CONDITION: Very Good; 1855 and 1862 gift inscriptions in a fine hand and a third in fine fading pencil on rep ; boards are beautiful and bright, spine faded but legible with top and bottom chipped and bumped to 1/4"; last ten pages show half inch water stain in bottom margin near spine, frontis tissue browned, interior clean but quite foxed except for center story; straight, solid, with good hinges. Juvenile hardback Gerard and his younger brother and sister William and Sophia spend the summer with their friend Amelia. In the first four stories, adapted for American children, they explore the natural world. It can be seen that their play is their study. (Amelia's independence and quick mind are delightful.) The second half of the book contains Krummacher's Parables, short sketches, fables, and sayings. Some are translated, with a letter to his sister, by the William of the book.
