12mo, pp. vi, 392 + engraved frontispiece and additional title-page. Original purple ribbed cloth, boards and spine blocked with decorative frames in blind, spine lettered in gilt. Engravings foxed, a little minor spotting in text. Binding somewhat shaken, boards and spine largely faded to brown (apart from irregular areas), cloth spotted and blotchy, extremities a touch worn. Booklabel of Wester Fordel to front pastedown, ownership inscription of Louisa Kirkland to title-page. Cooper's first novel, in the style of contemporary English domestic novels rather than the adventures for which he became famous.
