Description du livre Forgotten Books, United States, 2015. Paperback. État : New. 229 x 152 mm. Language: English . Brand New Book ***** Print on Demand *****. Excerpt from A Short History of Elementary Education in England Education is in the air. It was not always so. By the guidance of that Unseen Hand which, after all, shapes the affairs of men rough-hew them as we will, the time has arrived when it is not the form of government, or the rights of succession, but the methods of education which must agitate the minds of Englishmen, until some solution, possessing the elements of permanency, has been devised. That this solution may be the more easily arrived at it becomes of first-rate importance for those by whose suffrages the question of elementary education is to be ultimately decided to have a clear conception, not merely of the immediate point at issue in an approaching election, but also of the previous history of the movement which has culminated in the Act of 1902. Description du livre Forgotten Books, United States, 2015. Paperback. État : New. 229 x 152 mm. Language: English . Brand New Book ***** Print on Demand *****. Excerpt from History of the Atwood Family, in England and the United States: To Which Is Appended a Short Account of the Tenney Family These genealogical records of the Atwood family were collected by Charles Atwood, a lawyer of Boston, recently deceased. He bestowed upon them most careful research, both in this country and abroad, visiting personally, in 1854, Sanderstead, in Surrey County, England, in which place and its neighborhood, were the early homes of that branch of the family which appears in Boston in l642, and in Plymouth a few years earlier. It is much to be regretted that these documents were not arranged and printed during the life time of Mr. Atwood. All that can now be done is to secure their preservation, in the hope that the various scattered facts and the authorities from which they have with no small labor, been procured, may aid others engaged in similar researches, and perhaps supply some of those missing links which are often needed to make family chains complete. Manuscripts had been at times prepared by Mr. Atwood for relatives, giving a history of the family with circumstances of special interest connected with some of its members, more especially those who came to this country, and were his own immediate ancestors. It has been thought wise to prefix, in a somewhat narrative form, the substance of these manuscripts to the more minute and chronologically arranged memoranda and genealogical tables which follow, though this has involved some repetitions. Description du livre Forgotten Books, United States, 2015. Paperback. État : New. 229 x 152 mm. Language: English . Brand New Book ***** Print on Demand *****. Excerpt from A Brief History of Printing in England: A Short History of Printing, in England From Caxton, to the Present Time The treatment of the material used in this volume will be found somewhat different from that adopted in the two preceding. The narrower field of inquiry makes possible a closer following of the ordinary chronological method of arrangement rather than the topical method of the other volumes. An attempt is made to trace the history of printing in England through the centuries from Caxton to Morris and to include some insight into legal regulations, trade conditions, and industrial development generally. As before, it is to be remembered that this is a primer, a book of introductions. No attempt, therefore, is made to go far into details or to discuss disputed points or to include any considerable amount of technical detail. It is hoped that the reader will get a comprehensive view of the subject, will feel its human interest, and will catch some glimpse of its larger relation to the general history of the time. The writer has consulted a considerable range of authorities, a few of the more accessible of which are cited in the short list of books for supplementary reading. Mention should be made of the very excellent study of John Baskerville, privately printed by Col. Josiah H.Benton, of Boston. This book may perhaps be found in the larger public libraries. Here, as always, it is to be regretted that although much has been written on the subject of printing and of the history of printing a good general history of the subject is still greatly to be desired.
