A propos de cet article

Octavo, pp. [1-8] 1-117 [118: floral cut] [119-120: ads], original decorated pebbled red cloth, front panel stamped in gold and blind, spine panel stamped in gold, black coated endpapers. Second British (and possible first hardcover) edition. Published anonymously in the U.S. by Dillingham in 1890 as a 50¢ paperback. First published in the UK in London by W. H. Reynolds in 1891. This second UK edition was published in both cloth and paper wrappers as number 12 of "The Bellamy Library." In the first printing of this 1895 edition two pages of ads at the rear list numbers 13, 14 and 15 as "new volumes" in the series. This copy (a later issue, or later printing) lists numbers 15, 13 and 12 (this book, with publisher's statement "31,000 sold"). The narrator awakens from a long sleep to discover that women have gone out on strike and 'have combined as a sex to utterly refuse to perform any longer those duties and functions which have hitherto been magnanimously marked out for them by man, as being the sole tasks predestined for them by the creator.'" - Lewis, Utopian Literature, p. 124 (citing a later edition). Bleiler, Science-Fiction: The Early Years 1492. Sargent, British and American Utopian Literature, 1516-1985, p. 86. Suvin, Victorian Science Fiction in the UK, p. 46. Eaton Catalogue II, p.416.
