Description :

1 page (1 leaf; recto only). Letter to one Andrew Wordsworth, concerning two manuscript poems entrusted to him: "Dear Mr. Wordsworth, I must apologise for having kept the poem by Brian Giles which you sent to Stephen Spender for so long. I believe he wrote to you about it and I can only add that I agree with him -- it shows genuine talent and feeling, but I am afraid that I cannot use it in Horizon. Raymond Mortimer of the New Statesman sent us your own poem THE TEMPLES OF SHWE DAGON as it was too long for publication by him . I feel . that the whole is not quite up to the best parts, and I am therefore, returning it to you with regret". Includes the 2 typed manuscripts of the poems referred to (Giles' "Poem in Springtime"; 2 pages (2 leaves, rectos only), with few black ink corrections, additions and emendations; plus Wordsworth's "The Temples of Shwe Dagon"; 3 pages (3 leaves; rectos only), with few holographs corrections, additions and pasteovers (with pin as fastener). 3 pieces altogether; sold as a collection. Giles' poem would eventually be published in different form under different title ("A Dialogue in Springtime" in his first book "A Dead Sparrow" (London and New York, 1968). Slight creases; slight browning to edges (chiefly in the manuscripts); else a very well-preserved set of documents, outlining an editor's life and work. Connolly (1903-74), English author and journalist, founder and editor of Horizon magazine (1939-50) and briefly editor of The Observer; regular contributor to various literary periodicals; also notable for his autobiographical works and essays ("Previous Convictions", etc). Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" Tall (thin). N° de réf. du libraire L054989
