A propos de cet article

PUBLISHER/Imprint: Reykjavík : Ísafoldarprentsmiðja, 1908. Descr. 237 pages; 17 cm. Contents comprised of three works, namely: Vonir (comprised entirely of Canadian subject matter - a novel written in Winnipeg, 1888), Litli-Hvammur (1897) and Örðugasti hjallinn (1898). Note, 'Hvammur" is the name of a specific farm, not the generic word for farm - as in Iceland it is common to give one's farm a specific name. Scattered foxing to first few leaves, still Very Good in Red decorative cloth (hardcover). Three books in one. The first novel (novella), Vonir is Canadiana in that the subject matter is Canadian. Vonir was one of the first Icelandic language novels written in North America (Winnipeg, Canada); thus a very early item in the Icelandic-Canadian canon. The author (Kvaran) was a leading Icelandic novelist and critic who emigrated to Canada Canada in the 1880s, where he edited the pivotal Icelandic-Canadian newspaper Logberg, and he took a prominent role in Icelandic-Canadian community and political affairs. In 1891 he was selected President of the Icelandic Liberal Association of Manitoba. He returned to Iceland about 1895, after a ten year residency in Canada (Kristjanson). Stefan Einarson, in his History of Icelandic Prose Writers (Cornell University Press, p. 237) states that "Einar H. Kvaran, in America [read Canada] 1885-95 wrote his first masterpiece, Vonir (1890) in Winnipeg over a purely Icelandic-American [read Canadian] motif". The additional half-title page carries this printed notation, "Winnipeg, 1888', referring to the place and date of the writing of this novella. Referenced in Hjartar, p. 57.
