Description du livre London: Heinemann 1917., 1917. Small octavo. Publisher's cloth in superb illustrated dustjacket. Cheap paper stock has yellowed to edges, jacket has some inevitable nicks etc. but shows well; an extremely scarce survival of a Great War-era dustjacket on a major title. Description du livre London William Heinemann, 1898. First edition, first issue with 16pp. advertisements at rear dated 1897, 8vo., free endpapers browned, else very good, publisher's cloth, spine darkened, spine ends and corners a little bumped, remarkably good otherwise. This story was the basis for the famous broadcast of Orson Welles and the Mercury Theatre, actually in celebration of Halloween, about the invasion of the Martians. Many radio listeners missed the crucial detail that it was entirely fictitious and a dramatisation of the novel causing a considerable uproar and some people to panic. Wells 14.
