Hardcover. Etat : Very Good. No Jacket. cxxiv + 66pp Appendix of Original Documents etc. 8 plates rather foxed. Bound in green cloth with dark green spine. Edges uncut and a little frayed in places. Eight plates are included which all have foxing but the illustrations are still legible. Otherwise pages are in quite clean condition, with the odd margin note here and there. Includes Names of Subscribers and Contents. The plates include illustrations of Bampton Deanery, Town Hall & High Street. Vicarage and Bampton Church, Lew Church, Cote House, Shifford Church etc. Assume 1st edition. This copy has been rebound at some time and may have been a paperback originally.

The first edition of this scarce work.Illustrated with a frontispiece, and seven plates.Half-title is present, as is the list of subscribers to the rear.Collated, complete.A charming Victorian topographical study on Bampton-in-the-Bush, also called Bampton, a settlement and civil parish in Oxfordshire. It was recorded in the Domesday Book as a market town in 1086.By the Reverend John Allen Giles, a notable nineteenth century historian and scholar of Anglo-Saxon history. Giles was curate of Bampton during the time in which he wrote this work. In the original cloth binding, rebacked with the original boards and part of the original spine restored. Some rubbing, marks, and a little discolouration to the boards. A little wear and bumping to the extremities. Original backstrip is rubbed. Ink inscription to the front paste down. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are lightly age-toned and generally clean with some spots. Very Good. book.

A very scarce work from John Allen Giles (1808-1884). Giles was an English historian and scholar of Anglo-Saxo language. He is known for having revised translations of the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle and Bede"s Ecclesiastical History of the English People. This charming work on the history of Bampton contains 8 plates, including frontispiece. In a half calf leather binding, with marbled paper to the boards. Externally, smart. Some light rubbing to the extremities and some very light marks to the boards. Previous owners bookplate to front pastedown. Small sticker to bottom right of rear pastedown. Internally, firmly bound. Some light spotting throughout. Very Good. book.

A very good copy of this exceedingly rare book which constitutes the first ever report of the fledgling Swan River Colony and was published only 2 years after the colony was first settled. Bound in the original green papered boards with a black cloth spine and title panel on the spine. Only light rubbing of the boards. The uncut edges and endpapers are age tanned but otherwise the contents (including the fold out map) are in very good clean and undamaged condition with only very light sporadic foxing. This copy has the bookplate of eminent collector Graham Levey on the front pastedown and is now housed in a professionally made slipcase. Scans available if required.
