[From jacket flap] I write this book because I refuse to believe that the human race like the dinosaurs, is doomed to extinction. I am confid ent that man, the only creature that has survived the cataclysms of centuries, by the creativity of his mind, and the resiliency of his spirit, can remake his world into a world of life rather than death . The concerns of our planet must be shared by all. While we in the Third World recognize our share, indeed, more than our share, of the burden, we cannot ignore that our problems are not all of our making. The ideological and armed divisions of our age could just as well be a competition for sharing the world's surplus. But this is at best a worthy dream and a noble intention. Sacrifices are made unequally: the poor, who have less to sacrifice, are obliged to sacrifice more. Our debts are, of course, due to our own desires and aspirations, but their consequences exceed our culpability in wanting more for our peoples. Still, I would not have written this book if I did not feel that we can change the nature of m'en and nations. There has to be a time of recognition, a moment of getting together. After forty years of trying to achieve the noblest aims of all mankind, that time, I believe, has come. .

Ferdinand Emmanuel Edralin Marcos Sr. (September 11, 1917 - September 28, 1989) was a Filipino politician and lawyer who served as the tenth president of the Philippines from 1965 to 1986. He ruled under martial law from 1972 until 1981 and kept most of his martial law powers until he was deposed in 1986, branding his rule as "constitutional authoritarianism" under his Kilusang Bagong Lipunan (New Society Movement). Imelda Romualdez Marcos; born Imelda Romualdez; July 2, 1929) is a Filipino politician who was First Lady of the Philippines from 1965 to 1986, wielding significant political power after her husband Ferdinand Marcos placed the country under martial law in September 1972. During her husband's 21-year rule, Imelda Marcos ordered the construction of many grandiose architectural projects, using public funds, which eventually came to be known as her "edifice complex". She and her husband amassed a fortune estimated to have been worth US$5 billion to US$10 billion by 1986. Ferdinand Marcos (1917-1989) fought with US forces on Bataan, survived the subsequent "Death March", escaped and waged guerrilla warfare against the Japanese. After World War II, he entered politics, serving as a federal legislator and Senate President before being elected President of the Philippines in 1965. Beginning as a reformer, Marcos resorted to heavy-handed corruption (symbolized by the extravagance of First Lady Imelda Marcos) and repression to retain power. He declared marshal law and allegedly had key opponent Benigno Aquino assassinated. He was driven from power in 1986 by demonstrations after "officially" defeating Corazon Aquino, widow of the assassinated foe, in a presidential election. He died in exile in Hawaii. This book articulates for those too fearful or too confused, thoughts that have nagged us since January 26, 1970, when violence first broke out in Manila and heralded, it would seem, a long dark night for all. It addresses itself, with depth and awareness, to those who believe in the destiny of their country, who feel that things are being done but don't know exactly what; that the country is going some place but don't know exactly where, and how. It illuminates hazy portions of the present by seeing these against the anguish of our past, perceiving in today's continuing crisis intimations of a future with dignity, hope and freedom. It invites the uncommitted to commit themselves to democracy, at the same time redefining for those already committed the value of their affirmation: that, stripped of the enticements of propaganda, communism is still the "biggest swindle in a democracy." Without heat, without cant, without despair, this book quietly and eloquently meets the challenge of revolution, and shows the way. For all who would be encompassed by disillusion, here is a profound treatise written by a man best qualified of all, who has lived in the vortex of the troubled present, swept awash by the dissonances of change, radicalism, violenceâ "revolution, in shortâ "but survived with faith and perception intact. This is a private edition of 1000 copies, but this copy is unnumbered.
