The book was bought in by us with the spine detached and the mull to front hinge had failed. The Book has been re backed by us with new mull and back strip, new best match cloth spine with original cloth spine laid on and original end papers retained. The latter show indication of being disturbed but not unsightly. Original book binder's discreet label to rear paste down retained- Westley's & Co London. Ink gift insc. and date March 1859 to preliminary blank, some soiling- liquid ingression? to margins of a number of leaves- not affecting text and not significant but worthy of mention. No foxing. Mild even tanning to paper of book block. No other notable defects).

Joints fair condition worn and frayed, but structurally sound. Corners good condition bumped and worn. Boards good condition blind stamped decorated boards. Page edges good condition darkened to the top edges, others untrimmed. See above and photos. Internally Hinges good condition paper cracked with webbing visible, but sound. Paste downs good condition advert for the Voyage of the Resolute to the front paste down, for the North West Passage to the rear paste down. Contents very clean. Original brown endpapers with 1867 gift inscription to the ffep. In the original binding of navy cloth patterned in blind: gilt spine title rather dulled and faint marks to boards. All firm, spine ends and joints professionally refurbished. A very good sound copy.

In the original publisher's full cloth binding. Externally sound with shelf wear, bumped to head and tail of spine and extremities, back strip lightly darkened. Hinges slightly strained, holding firm. Evidence of the removal of a bookplate to front pastedown. Internally, firmly bound. Pages generally clean. Good. book.

Rebound, probably in the early 20th C, in Black cloth with Gilt lettering to spine. 365 Pages, 350g, 6 1/4" Tall. Very slight wear to cloth, old booksellers data penciled on endpapers. No signatures. Paper slightly age darkened an a very occasional spot of browning. Very faint small brownish stain at top of frontispiece, nowhere near the picture. Very faint soiling to fore margin of first few pages. Size: 16mo - over 5¾" - 6¾" tall.

Gilt Decoration fills the other Compartments. Gilt Linear Border to front and back. Edges and bands have Gilt Hatching. All Page edges and Endpapers Marbled. 407 Pages, 570g, 7 3/4" Tall. Tall. Some wear to Leather, mainly at corners and around spine, 2 small pieces of leather missing at spine ends (see photos). No inscriptions except an old penciled price in corner of endpaper. Paper very slightly age darkened. A few spots of faint foxing on endpapers, Frontis & Title page. A few tiny pieces torn from fore margins of contents pages. Otherwise Pages in very good, clean condition. Small dent to fore edge of cover on the back. Please ask if you would like more pictures or information. Size: 12mo - over 6¾" - 7¾" tall.
