3pp. There is an outline of the proposal to make the protest. Sections of the text read: "do hereby condemn in the most vehement manner the tyrannical and autocratic conduct of Dublin Castle and its police agents for laying its unholy hands, stained with infamy upon the person of our pure-souled and liberty loving president Professor Seamus O'Neill.recent horrible.upon our noble and patriotic countrymen in British Dungeons.we invite.to band together.make it again impossible for that same tyrant to torture to death the Mother land that bore them. That in the words of.Dr. Fogarty Bishop of Killaloe We abhor with loathing and disgust the hellish and uncivilized practise known as Forcible feeding." with signature of Club Secretary F. Phillips. Written on back of printed circular to bakers regarding what they could charge for the price of a loaf of bread with date September 1917. Professor O'Neill was arrested in March 1917as he was leaving Cashel for Rockwell, where he taught. There was no further news of him for the year. Born in Dungarvan in 1892, the family moved to Clonmel in 1899 where Seamus received his schooling. He trained as a teacher at De La Salle Teacher Training College, Waterford, and got his first job at Rockwell College. Later he served time in Frongoch, Durham and other places. After his release, he returned to Rockwell where was greeted with a two by four inch card, which read: "We no longer have a job for you"! After that he got part-time work in the High School, Clonmel and in Ring College. He took no part in the Civil War and when the Garda Siochana came into existence in 1923, he joined the first week. He made a rapid rise through the ranks going from Guard to Sergeant to Superintendent in the course of a single week! He remained a Superintendent until he retired in Galway in 1957, apparently having fallen foul of the Garda Commissioner, Eoin O'Duffy. He married three times, had five sons and died in January 1974. He is buried in Deansgrange Cemetery in Dublin. The secretary was Francis Phillips of Cashel, Co. Tipperary. Francis Phillips [1872-1968], a leading Sinn Feiner and public representative from Ladyswell, Cashel, Co. Tipperary. The first Sinn Fein club in Cashel was formed on 14 October 1914, when Francis Phillips was one of five people present. Phillips, who had spent some time in the United States, worked at a local bakery. He was closely associated with Pierce McCan both in Sinn Fein and in the Tipperary Volunteers. The Volunteer unit had prepared to take the field in the Rising in 1916, but their plans were thrown into confusion by MacNeill's countermanding order. By the time the situation became clear, it was too late for the Tipperary men to do anything useful. In August 1918 Francis Phillips was arrested after reading the 1916 Proclamation at a mass meeting in Cashel at the request of Sinn Fein President Eamon de Valera. Tried under the Defence Of The Realm Act (DORA), he was sentenced to two years imprisonment, mostly served in Belfast Jail, where his co-prisoners included Ernest Blythe and Austin Stack. After his release he continued his political activities, and after independence was Chairman of Cashel Urban District Council.

Soft cover. Etat : Very Good. Beatrice Elvery (illustrateur). 1st Edition. A very good edition of Padraic Mac Piarais's (Patrick Pearse) first book of short stories; Íosagán agus Sgéalta Eile (LITTLE JESUS AND OTHER STORIES)), in its original format as published by Connradh na Gaedhilge in Baile Ata Cliath, around 1907, with Maire Ni Raghallaigh as distributor. Other than the missing 1907 date on title page, this book is similar to a first edition. The book has light brown soft covers with a drawing of Íosagán on the front cover between the title and the author's & illustrator's name plus the price in sterling and a small illustration of two birds, facing one another. The book contains 118 pages, with a 4 page Foreword, 4 stories over 90 pages; I?osaga?n (Little Jesus), An Sagart ( The Priest), Bairbre (Barbara) & Eoghaini?n na nEan ("Eoineen of the Birds") plus a 23 page Vocabulary. The book is illustrated by Beatrice Elvery, with 4 full page delightful full colour prints, 1 for each story, plus partially hand coloured illustrations. The inside cover has a name Peigi Ni Meara written, while the title page has Deidre Laoide/Deidre Lloyd and Grainne Ni Laoide/Grainne Ni Laoide. The back cover has a large ink blot & a little drawing. The pages of the book are held together tightly by two original staples, which have rusted on the front and back pages. The front/back covers are intact and are in good condition but the spine has lost the bottom 3 cm (1") & has a small tear at the top. The pages themselves are in excellent order, apart from a few pages where the corner is turning up slightly. Many of the pages appear as new. Pearse built a cottage at Rosmuc in the Connemara Gaeltacht, where he spent his summer holidays. He drew inspiration from the rural way of life in Rosmuc to write these stories. A complementary gift of a mounted photo of Pearce?s cottage is included. Pearse believed that language was intrinsic to the identity of a nation. Pearce signed the ?Proclamation of the Irish Republic?, which he as Chairman of the Provisional Government read to the public on Easter Monday 25th April, 1916 outside the GPO. This historic little book from 1907 is a unique stepping stone on the road to Irish Freedom, giving a unique insight into the mind of Pearse. Clear removable archival film protects the soft covers.
