Hardcover. Etat : Very Good Minus. Edmund Dulac (illustrateur). Is this the First of the George H. Doran edition? First Editions of this publisher were established by the presence of the GHD oval or diamond-shaped symbol on either the Title page or Copyright page up until September, 1921. Thereafter, to establish a First Edition the GHD symbol had to be on the Copyright page. On my book it's on the Title page. The problem: my book is not dated. Was it published before September 1921 or after? I don't know. Curiously, one of the illustrations referenced on the Illustrations page as page 164 is actually on page 162 (or facing page 162, the illustration pages are not included in the numbering of the pages). That's the kind of error you see in First and not in later editions where errors are corrected. Perhaps more importantly is 1) how very rare this Doran/Edmund Dulac illustrated edition is, and 2) that All 28 full-page color plates (which includes the frontispiece) are present and in excellent condition. Also nice, these are the original covers. You can see them in the photos. Out of habit I'll state the obvious: there is a loss of cloth off the bottom edge of the spine, taking out the 'D' in Doran (second photo). There is rub-through at all four corners, also a few spots of it along the bottom edge of the front cover. There is the scuffing you can see. There is fading at the margins. There is that line of reddish discoloration on the front. There's some light handling soiling. The lavender color of the original boards has survived (although I don't know what the scans will make of it) in between the margin fading. There is a small tear above the loss at the bottom of the spine, a whitish spot on the middle of the spine, and a little whitening across the gilt lettering at the top of the spine. The inlaid gilt lettering on the front cover is very bright. There is one tiny tear on the blue margin of the square surrounding the lettering. The book is square, not slanted. I think that's a nice thing after all this time. The page edges are pretty clean, only a couple of very tiny spots on the bottom edge. I think the book is pretty solidly bound. Talking just about the text pages, I didn't find any detached or loose ones. And I only saw a few very, very thin spaces between facing pages, nothing to create concern. It should be noted that there are no spaces or cracks between the inside covers and end papers. Of the twenty-eight color plates three (including the frontispiece), are detached. However, they are in excellent condition, meaning that the detachment is clean and there are no tears. I also counted six that were partly detached. Five of those six where the detachment was over one half, usually the top half and one only one-fifth detached. Again, there were no tears on any of the six and where they were detached it was clean. Here's something that I think is particularly important: all 28 of the Dulac color plates are in excellent condition. They're are all very clean and I don't think there are any tears. If you're looking at the illustrations themselves, within their squares, I'm comfortable saying that they are in perfect condition. As for the text pages, they are very clean throughout. The instances of soiling are very few and very minor, very small. I don't think I saw one conspicuous instance of soiling. There is no foxing. There is a light crease at the top corner of the pages. The kind of semi-crease that's typically caused by a bump to the covers, although I don't see a bump/crease at the cover corner. These light creases are not the kind that are created by folding down the corner of the page. Otherwise, there are very few creases. I saw one scuff on a page, with a bit of paper lifting up. I didn't see any tears. No losses. I'm looking at my notes now. I turned over every page. I meant to say that the illustrations are beautiful, the colors vivid. Finally, there are no markings in this book. There are no attachments. And no one has written their name or anything else anywhere.
