Antoinette (Tony) Powell-Cotton was the daughter of Major Percy Horace Gordon Powell-Cotton (1866-1940), explorer, naturalist, founder in 1896 of the Quex Museum (the Powell-Cotton collection), at Birchington, Kent. 3pp., 12mo. Fair, on lightly-aged paper, with a couple of minor damp stains to the first leaf of two. She writes that her family have just spoken to Professor Herskovits [the American anthropologist Melville Jean Herskovits (1895-1963)], 'and he gave us a message that you would like to see our specimens from Angola'. Her family would be 'pleased to show them and feel sure we would glean a great deal of interesting information' from Driberg, but they are afraid Herskovits 'misunderstood us': 'We said we hoped to meet you one day at a lecture or something like that', but they feel that it is 'rather a long way to come from Cambridge especially to see the things which may not be at all in your line, and though we think the details obtained regarding them to be fairly accurate we are complete amateurs.' They would however be delighted to show Driberg the specimens in London, 'and to hear any comments & suggestions you may have to make'.

Powell-Cotton (1866-1940) was an English explorer, hunter, early conservationist, and documentary filmmaker. He created the Powell-Cotton Museum on the grounds of his home and filled it with specimens from Africa, possibly creating the largest collection of animals shot by one man. This book is about his hunting in British East Africa (Kenya and Uganda). He describes hunts after impala, rhino, lion, elephant, kudu, giraffe, hippo, and a variety of plains game. He spent time with the Kikuyu and Masai. He was able to prove the existence, and bring back a specimen of, the 5 horn giraffe first discovered by Sir Harry Johnston. Powell-Cotton made a large number of films including ethnographic documentaries and wildlife films. Both of his daughters became conservationists. A major book on East African hunting with much on elephants. ; 8vo 8" - 9" tall; 619 pages.
