Both volumes have rare dustjackets, underpaper layered with deep red cloth, and spine trim noting 'The Sketck-Book, Irving, (Volume) 1,2, Van Tassel Edition'. Top page ends gold gilt. Blue endpapers. All pages waxed. All pages ruled in red and green plant floral designs. 2nd blank page missing from both volumes, for name removal. 294 + 315 pages. Frontispieces and thirty other plates, including four, after drawings by Arthur Rackham, each with tissue guard with caption printed in red. The Van Tassel Edition, a lavish production which reprinted Irving's 'greatest literary success' from 1819-20, including such classic short stories as 'Rip Van Winkle' and 'The Legend of Sleepy Hollow.' Many of the other pieces in The Sketch-Book are travel sketches drawn from Irving's trip to England in 1815. A young Arthur Rackham (1867- 1939), only recently embarked upon his career, as a book illustrator. RBR27.
