This murder trial is famous because the convict was found to have been illegally convicted when the case was appealed eighteen years later, within twenty-four hours of his intended execution. He was given a monetary award to compensate for his years in prison. Arthur Conan Doyle was among those who drew public attention to the case and provoked the appeal.
