folio. pp. 2 p.l., 57. lithographed text in double columns. 1 full-page chromolithograph, coloured title vignette & numerous text illus., including 65 small vignettes & headpieces (3 in colour), 17 views (5 in colour), & 1 partially coloured map. A fine copy in original blind & gilt-stamped cloth, expertly rebacked & 1 corner renewed (few short tears to outer margin of a few leaves). First Edition. A lithographed facsimile of the original manuscript monthly newspaper issued on board the H.M.S. Resolute during a forced wintering in Barrow Strait between Griffith and Cornwallis Island by the Franklin search expedition commanded by Horatio Thomas Austin. The expedition was distinguished for having discovered the site of Franklin s first winter quarters on Beechey Island. There were five issues in all of the Illustrated Arctic News , dated October, 1850, to March, 1851 (February omitted). In addition to the numerous small vignettes and attractive views in the text, some of which are in colour, there is one full-page chromolithograph, Grand Bal Masqué, H.M.S. Resolute Dec. 5, 1850, and a number of play-bills in drawn lettering in the style of the time. Most of the illustrations were supplied by joint editor, George Frederick McDougall, second master on the Resolute, who made other contributions in the form of poems and short articles. The work is quite scarce in good complete condition. Abbey, Travel, II 639. Arctic Bib. 22800. Sabin 23608. TPL 5444.
