Taschenbuch. Etat : Neu. This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -Seminar paper from the year 2012 in the subject Politics - Environmental Policy, grade: 1,3, University of Hamburg, language: English, abstract: Oil is one of these fossil fuels on which our society is dependent on in the beginning of the 21st Century. Since 1950 the world population has more than tripled, there is a growing demand for energy, especially in developing countries such as China. The more the world develops, the greater becomes its thirst for energy and oil; despite repeated calls to save it. Energy even became a national security issue.Primarily, in this paper I show and analyse the world's dependence on oil, followed by an outline of the disadvantages it comes along with. There are several reasons for why we should become independent of oil, such as its emissions, environmental destruction, climate change, resource scarcity, conflict and unethical production. Thereafter, I proceed to introduce an approach on how to reduce this dependency, focussing on renewable resources. I will conclude that it is absolutely necessary for us to become independent of oil as well as other fossil fuels and nuclear energy, which for reasons of space will not be dealt with in detail. If we do not, we will severely harm, if not destroy, our society, the environment and eventually the planet we are living on. 20 pp. Englisch.

This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -Seminar paper from the year 2012 in the subject Politics - International Politics - Topic: European Union, grade: 1,0, Charles University in Prague, language: English, abstract: Scotland is a region in Western Europe with a strong identity and a long tradition of a regional autonomy movement. Since Scotland got its own government in 1999, which is still very dependent on the UK central government, and as the Scottish National Party (SNP) is currently the majority party in this government, independence became an important issue in Scottish politics. The SNP is committed to full constitutional independence of Scotland within the European Union. After 300 years of union, the Scottish are allowed to hold a referendum on their independence in 2014. However, only a third of the population is in favour of this. This paper starts with an explanation of the development of the Scottish independence movement, analyses devolution and the Scottish executive's ways of influencing European politics. It then goes on to examine EU regional policy 2007-2013 and assesses the impact of various factors influencing the demand for more autonomy. 20 pp. Englisch.

Taschenbuch. Etat : Neu. This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -Literature Review from the year 2013 in the subject South Asian Studies, South-Eastern Asian Studies, grade: 1,0, Charles University in Prague, language: English, abstract: Kiran Nagarkar's post-colonial novel was published in 1995. He tells a hilarious story set in the 1950s and 1960s about two boys: Ravan, a Maratha Hindu, and Eddie, a Roman Catholic. Both are growing up in the Central Works Department chawl number 17 in Bombay and even if they barely interact throughout the whole novel, their ways of life are very similar to each other.I will provide a brief summary of the book, introducing the characters and storyline and describe Nagarkar's style of writing, which takes turns in the ongoing plot and documentary episodes. The issue I want to concentrate on is the relationship and conflict between Hinduism and Christianity, two religions which coexist closely in the Indian chawl. The most important part of the book to refer to this topic is one documentary episode on neighbours, in which Nagarkar describes the life in the chawl in close detail and with much irony.Thereafter, I will draw on books and articles of primary and secondary literature, to evaluate Nagarkar's presentation of Hinduism and Christianity in Bombay. To do so, I will explain the circumstances of that time and show similarities to the novel.I will conclude that Nagarkar's novel provides a very good and real impression of what life and the Hindu-Christian relationship were like that time and is thus a good novel to delve into this era right after Indian independence. It is a good document of a contemporary witness, as I guess that Nagarkar has lived through a live in such a chawl himself or had at least some kind of first hand experience. As I was working with a German version of the novel, I am not using any direct quotations from the book. 20 pp. Englisch.

This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -Studienarbeit aus dem Jahr 2012 im Fachbereich Politik - Politische Theorie und Ideengeschichte, Note: 2,0, Universität Hamburg, Sprache: Deutsch, Abstract: 'When we change the way we communicate, we change society.' 24 pp. Deutsch.

This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -Seminar paper from the year 2012 in the subject South Asian Studies, South-Eastern Asian Studies, grade: 1,0, Charles University in Prague, language: English, abstract: Energy is the key to a state's economic growth: it influences not only sustainable development, but also areas such as education and health. India is one of the world's fasted growing economies and, consequently, energy markets. It is confronted with the challenge of closing the vast gap between energy demand and supply and additionally considering climate change. Currently, India's energy mix is dominated by fossil fuels such as oil and coal, which has to be imported and makes the country dependent on global price fluctuations.Nuclear power is an energy resource that could increase India's energy security and fulfil the needs of guaranteeing both economic growth and environmental sustainability for India. This paper analyses India's Nuclear Energy Policy, its three stage nuclear plan and its historical development. Due to lacking civil nuclear cooperation with other countries and few uranium reserves of bad quality, India was not able to develop and unfold its nuclear program over the last decades. An important step towards a larger share of nuclear power has been the Indo-US nuclear deal, which the Indian government appreciates very much, as it opened up trade options for technology and fuel for India.Morever, this paper focuses on legal issues concerning nuclear energy, its advantages and disadvanteges and will also give critique on the implementation and integration of the policy. It will conclude that nuclear energy has a lot of obstacles, but is an important alternative option for India to become independent from fossil fuels. 20 pp. Englisch.

This paper analyses the concept democratic deficit, firstly in general, defining democracy and the term democratic deficit, and providing general reasons for this perception. This paper supports the thesis of a democratic deficit for multiple reasons, including a dominating executive in the EU, a lack of accountability of EU institutions, technocratic untransparent decision-making and a European Parliament with too few powers. The focus of this paper rests on the 'No Demos'-Thesis: that European democracy cannot be achieved simply because the lack of a European demos, which is the Greek word for people. Therefore, at the beginning of the second part, the term demos will be defined and the role of citizenship of the EU explained. Thereafter, reasons for the lack of a demos at EU level are contextualised: the disregard of citizens of the EU, the lack of a European-wide public discourse, the complexity of European decision-making and the distance of the EU to the average citizen. These factors result in a low and steadily decreasing voter turnout in EU elections. 16 pp. Englisch.

This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -Seminar paper from the year 2009 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Culture and Applied Geography, grade: 1,0, Dresden Technical University (Anglistik), language: English, abstract: 'Fog in the Channel, Continent Cut off', goes the famous headline that appeared in The Times around 1900. It perfectly captures the image of Great Britain being an island nation separate from Europe whose foreign policy is characterised by the feeling of holding a special position and distance to Europe. European integration is a very emotive issue in modern British politics concerning Britain's reluctance to be involved and to forgo its parliamentary sovereignty. This 'traditional' Euroscepticism led to Britain's reputation as 'awkward partner' which is said to be due to its long-standing empire tradition, its special relationship with the USA and its inbred island mentality.1When in 1997, after 18 years of Conservative government, the 'New Labour' party won the majority of votes with a new party concept, a young pro-European leader and an overall more positive attitude towards Europe, this governmental change promised a turning point in British European policy. In the following term paper I am going to analyse in how far the then Prime Minister Tony Blair did succeed or fail in his mission to take Britain closer to the heart of Europe. My paper is going to start with a short portrait of the person Blair and continues to introduce his aims. An analysis of his policies follows. Finally I am going to point out his achievements and his fail or respectively success and the reasons therefore. In terms of my sources I am basically relying on articles in anthologies such as The Europeanization of British Politics edited by Ian Bache and Andrew Jordan, Länderbericht Großbritannien of Hans Kastendiek and Roland Sturm and Blair's Britain 1997-2007 of Anthony Seldon. But there were also monographs, an online source and an article of the scientific journal International Affairs used. 20 pp. Englisch.

The father forbids the bodily encounter with the mother,' claims Luce Irigaray at a conference in 1981 (536). The patriarchal order kept women silent and granted them no identity, being dominated by the law of the father who wants to be the sole creator. Women were confined to the function of reproduction and forbidden to create. (533-37) Angela Carter wrote her novel The Magic Toyshop in 1967. This is a time when many riots were about to take place, for instance concerning politics, class, race or gender issues. Women questioned the chains stopping them from experimenting with their reality and pushing them into stereotypical images such as mother or housewife. 16 pp. Englisch.

I will start by establishing Said's argument in detail and engage with some of the paradoxes revealed within it. This will be followed by what Kureishi opines which is not completely in favour of nor against Said and thus problematises some of Said's premises.Orientalism is a system of images, attitudes and ways of seeing the Orient. It is the academic study of political and literary discourse about Arabs, Islam and the Middle East, especially by France, Britain and the USA. Many stereotypes within Orient writing in the West make its presentation contradictory in that it is both attractive and repulsive at the same time. 16 pp. Englisch.

This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -Seminar paper from the year 2009 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Linguistics, grade: 2, 5, Dresden Technical University, language: English, abstract: The use of language in our everyday life is an automatic process we usually do not reflect on. Nevertheless - or perhaps for exactly this reason- it is influenced by the speech community we live in. Our own culture provides us with a world view that is different from all other cultures and influences our language in that it determines which concepts are salient and worth being articulated. (Saeed 1997: 42)Prototype theory as founded by the US-American linguist Eleanor Rosch in the 1970s is an area of research situated between linguistics and psychology and deals with the internal structure of categories. Rosch pointed out that many categories cannot be defined through necessary and sufficient conditions but rather show a prototypical structure. This structure is organised by degree of membership and typicality of members of a category. As a result, there exist bad birds and better birds, good fruit, less good fruit and so on. It is a well-known fact that prototypical knowledge has significant impact on the representation of and dealing with linguistic and conceptional structures. (Bußmann 2002: 543)In the following paper I am going to analyse in how far culture can influence our perception of concepts and also our usage of language. The first chapter deals with theoretical facts on prototype theory. The second one provides information on cultural differences due to prototypes and gives examples. 16 pp. Englisch.

This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -Bachelor Thesis from the year 2011 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Literature, grade: 1,7, Dresden Technical University (Anglistik), language: English, abstract: In 1967 Angela Carter published a novel about an adolescent female protagonist growing up in a patriarchal system. Published at a moment in history when significant change, not only for women, but all of the western world was about to take place, The Magic Toyshop illuminates the metamorphosing social dynamics. Angela Carter sensed this moment but did not know where it was going to lead and what it would offer women. Guiding the reader through these pending seismic changes is Melanie, the novel's protagonist. As opposed to the other female characters of the novel who occupy only a fixed role suiting patriarchal hierarchy, Melanie is constantly shifting roles. She can be read as representative of the rebelling female, challenging patriarchal order. Melanie realises that none of the potential roles society offers women will satisfy her. In the end, she has the chance to enter a new world and a relationship defined by equality. The way Angela Carter represents the female characters in The Magic Toyshop is indicative of the turbulence of the times. In order to properly assess, analyse and interpret these representations, it is necessary to take account of the historical, cultural and political circumstances of the late 1960s and the theorists who have written about Carter. Combined, they allow the modern reader to properly contextualise and understand The Magic Toyshop.Remarkably, Carter seemed to be ahead of her time, analysing and criticising the traditional representations of femininity that society imposed on women. It was a time when they still belonged to the private sphere, embodying the roles of mothers or housewives, even though many women already were active in the work force. Men continued to prevail in the public sphere, enforcing patriarchal structures. These socially constructed representations are challenged through Melanie's conflicted relationship with her production as a feminine subject (Bristow and Broughton 10). Not only is she the victim of a patriarchal system, but she also tries to challenge and change social constructions through creating an independent identification of herself. The conventional association of women with physical illness and men with emotional need is challenged and mocked through bizarre events (Peach 181). In the use of gothic, fairy tale and dystopia, Carter establishes new representational spaces for sexual identity (Bristow and Broughton 15). [.] 44 pp. Englisch.
