Cloth. Etat : Very Good. Etat de la jaquette : Good. Reid-Henry, D.M. (illustrateur). First. xlviii, 207pp., ill., colour plates, maps, folding map. VG, in slightly edge-frayed and soiled DJ, which also has a label scar to the front flap. Folding map slightly rumpled, and some dust-soiling to page edges; interior clean, binding sound, overall lovely copy. Volume Two of the eventual four-volume work. "In this, the second volume of Dr. Bannerman's study of the birds of the Atlantic Islands, the author describes the birds of Madeira and the adjoining islands. It has been his aim to bring together in one volume all that is known about the bird life of the islands of the Madeira group, not only the large ones, famous as breeding grounds of petrels and shearwaters, but of the smaller islands as well. In addition to his own first-hand observations, the author makes full use of earlier data collected by German, French, Portuguese, American and British ornithologists and this is in fact the first time all the available information on the subject has been published in one book. A feature of the book is an account of the topography of Madeira and Porto Santo, with detailed descriptions of the climate, vegetation, and geological formation." Size: 4to - over 9¾" - 12" tall. Some light spotting to fore-edges of text blocks and ends o/w. contents fine, in thor. vg. to nr. fine dws. Vol. II has, attached to the front pastedown, a charming letter (on headed notepaper and dated 21st January 1962) from David Bannerman to David Boddington. In it Bannerman explains that he will be staying on the island of Madeira at the same time that Boddington would be there for his honeymoon. He says that it will be the wrong time of year for Petrels and for landing on the Desertas. He acknowledged that given the reason for Boddington s visit, the might not want to, but that if Boddington did want to meet up for birding, then he would happily do so. Bannerman also gives the address where he was staying. Also, loosely inserted is the newspaper obituary of Madeiran ornithologist Alec Zino.
