Hard Cover. Etat : Very Good. Illustrated (illustrateur). First Edition. Philadelphia: Butler, 1858. 8vo. Full leather binding with 6 compartments, raised ridges. Brown endpapers. 1872 dated signature of prevous owner. Reginald Heber (21 April 1783 - 3 April 1826) was an English bishop, man of letters and hymn-writer. After 16 years as a country parson, he served as Bishop of Calcutta until his death at the age of 42. The son of a rich landowner and cleric, Heber gained fame at the University of Oxford as a poet. After graduation he made an extended tour of Scandinavia, Russia and Central Europe. Ordained in 1807, he took over his father's old parish, Hodnet, Shropshire. He also wrote hymns and general literature, including a study of the works of the 17th-century cleric Jeremy Taylor. He was consecrated Bishop of Calcutta in October 1823. He travelled widely and worked to improve the spiritual and general living conditions of his flock. Arduous duties, a hostile climate and poor health led to his collapse and death after less than three years in India. Memorials were erected there and in St Paul's Cathedral, London. A collection of his hymns appeared soon after his death. One, "Holy, Holy, Holy", remains popular for Trinity Sunday. Boards rubbed at extremities and on front and back of decorations. Shallow chipping top of spine. Hinges sound. Very good. Size: 8vo.

Wyon studied at the Royal Academy schools from 1829, and became a celebrated sculptor, exhibiting at the Royal Academy regularly from 1831 to 1876. Among his commissions were works intended for reproduction by Wedgwood as well as numerous portrait busts. 1p., 12mo. In good condition, lightly aged. The subject of the letter is Chantrey's 1847 statue of Reginald Heber (1783-1826), Bishop of Calcutta, now in St Paul's Cathedral in that city. The letter begins: 'If the Statue you allude to is that of a Bishop kneeling as I take it to be it is Chantrey's work & one of his best.' If it were his 'good fortune' to exercise his 'poor abilities on a like subject', it would be his 'earnest endeavour to catch something of the Spirit of that great Master of portrait Sculpture'.

Near-contemporary brown half-calf over pebble-grained cloth, spined ornamented in gilt and each with two black morocco lettering-pieces, pp. lxvii, 450; vi, [2], 564; vi, [2], 525, [2], viii, 25 wood-engraved plates, only light wear to extremities, very faint spotting internally; an attractive copy of this edition, printed on good quality laid paper. Published in the year of the first edition. Reginald Heber (1783-1826) was appointed Bishop of Calcutta in 1823, and travelled widely through the subcontinent to minister to the far-flung protestant community: 'His most notable journey, of a length and difficulty unprecedented for a Church of England bishop, was the one which he undertook across northern India -- up the Gangetic plain, through the mountains of Kumaon and the deserts of Rajputana, and finally visiting Ceylon on his way back to Calcutta by sea. His journal was published as the Narrative of a journey [.] Its popularity was attested by the fact that five editions had been published by 1844, and its exceptional value as a description of India was recognized by contemporaries and by modern historians alike' (ODNB), and Lowndes considered the Narrative 'A highly valuable, interesting, and most delightful work'.
