Hardcover. Etat : Good. No Jacket. 367 p. ; 21 cm. ; LCCN: 06-36594 ; LC: PZ3.D7188; Dewey: 813.49 ; OCLC: 3596089 ; blue cloth with gold lettering and design ; repair to front hinge ; torn flyleaf ; heavy foxing ; nick to top of spine ; Published in 1890, Caesar's Column is an account of a trip to New York City in 1988 by a visitor from the Swiss colony of Uganda. The great metropolis dazzles with its futuristic technology, but its ostentatious wealth and luxury mask the brutal repression of the laboring classes by their rich bosses. The workers, aided by international terrorists [!], stage a violent revolt and the narrator flees the devastated city by airship to found an agrarian utopia in Africa. Fueled by outrage at social conditions, Caesar's Column was the first major dystopian novel in the English language. Its author, Ignatius Donnelly, was the most famous-and controversial-American populist politician of the day, and his book became a huge bestseller. --Wesleyan University Press ; "An apocalyptic vision conceived in urgency and despair by one of the most fascinating mavericks in American political history, the novel accords more closely with the anxious temper of our own times than other anticipatory works that emerged from the same historical moment. For all its faults, Caesar's Column remains surprisingly readable, even gripping, today. It is a milestone in the formative stage of modern science fiction."--Nicholas Ruddick ; G. Book.

Hard Cover. Etat : Very Good. No Jacket. 2nd Printing. 2nd printing, released one year after first edition. Paper along front hinge split, hinge itself holding strongly, pages lightly toned. 1891 Hard Cover. 367 pp. 8vo. Maroon cloth, gilt titles and decoration. One of the first dystopian novels written in the English language. First published in 1890, just three years after Bellamy's classic utopia Looking Backward, this work can be seen as a reaction to Bellamy, as well as to the political climate of the day. It illuminates injustices and social inequalities that exist in civilizations focused on technological progress and the pursuit of wealth. Donnelly was a staunch Populist, and this ideology is evident throughout. Though the novel describes the overthrow of civilization, he states in his preface, "Neither am I an anarchist: for I paint a dreadful picture of the world-wreck which successful anarchism would produce." Though it was popular, it was not reissued until Harvard's Belknap Press reprinted it in 1960. Pre-1960 imprints in general, and Schulte editions in particular, are uncommon on the market. Paperback. Etat : Very Good. 1st Edition. London, Frederick Warne, 1891. First Edition. First Impression. Paperback. A very good copy. First British edition, maybe. There was a Sampson, Low edition which appears to be the authorised issue, suggesting this isn't authorised. The Sampson Low edition apparently has ads dated October 1890 (the US first edition was published in 1890). Uncommon though. An important American dystopia; or utopia to some extent; or even a utopia collapsing to dystopia. Set in the year 1988 the story involves a trip to a New York city replete with technological wonders only to find a descent into the brutality of the oligarchies. Pretty standard stuff. A nice enough copy with some loss to the lower spine, some foxing to the wrappers and a reading lean. Internally pretty good with some foxing to the first few leaves. [10726, Hyraxia Books].
