Hardcover. Etat : Good. Revised and Re-edited. [6], xi, [1], 418, [4] pages. With steel portraits and woodcuts. Rebound in red. Spine faded. Hinges weak. Some page foxing. Some marks to pages. With 5 Chapters titles as follows: Turf Worthies, Exmoor to Wit, Turf Cracks, Stag, Drag and Flag, Horn & Hound. Frontis portrait/engraving of Richard Tattersall and title page engraved portrait vignette of jockey "Nat". Henry Hall Dixon (16 May 1822, Warwick Bridge - 16 March 1870, Kensington) was an English sporting writer known by his nom de plume, "The Druid". Henry Hall Dixon was born at Warwick Bridge, Cumberland, on 16 May 1822, and was educated at Rugby School and at Trinity College, Cambridge, where he graduated in 1846. He took up the profession of the law, but, though called to the bar in 1853, soon returned to sporting journalism, in which he had already made a name for himself, and began to write regularly for The Sporting Magazine, in the pages of which appeared three of his novels, Post and Paddock (1856), Silk and Scarlet (1859), and Scott and Sebright (1862). He also published a legal compendium entitled The Law of the Farm (1858), which ran through several editions. His other more important works were Field and Fern (1865), giving an account of the herds and flocks of Scotland, and Saddle and Sirloin (1870), treating in the same manner those of England. Richard Tattersall (June 1724 - 21 February 1795) was the founder of the racehorse auctioneers Tattersalls. Horse racing is the second largest spectator sport in Great Britain, and one of the longest established, with a history dating back many centuries. The major horse racing events such as Royal Ascot and Cheltenham Festival are important dates in the British and international sporting and society calendar. The sport has taken place in the country since Roman times and many of the sport's traditions and rules originated there. The Jockey Club, established in 1750, codified the Rules of Racing and one of its members, Admiral Rous laid the foundations of the handicapping system for horse racing, including the weight-for-age scale. Britain is also home to racecourses including Newmarket, Ascot and Cheltenham and races including The Derby at Epsom, The Grand National and Cheltenham Gold Cup. The UK has also produced some of the greatest jockeys, including Fred Archer, Sir Gordon Richards and Lester Piggott. Steeplechasing first became organized by Tom Colman at St Albans in the early 1830s. By the end of that decade, the Grand National had been established at Aintree by William Lynn. In 1875, Sandown Park became the first racecourse to open a separate members' enclosure. The Jockey Club governed the sport until its governance role was handed to the British Horseracing Board, (formed in June 1993).

Hardcover. Etat : Very Good. First Edition. London, Rogerson & Tuxford, 1859 (first edition). Small octavo, [ii], viii, 398, 8 (publisher's catalogue) pages with an illustration plus 6 plates (one folding), a frontispiece portrait and a title page vignette. Blind-decorated red cloth lettered in gilt on the spine, all edges sprinkled red; cloth a little flecked and marked, with the spine sunned and lightly worn at the head; occasional foxing; leading edge of the folding plate creased, with a few tiny tears; minor signs of use and handling; overall a very good copy. Henry Hall Dixon (1822-1870), sporting writer known as 'The Druid', was 'an interested spectator of all kinds of sport, and was emphatically one of those lookers-on who see most of the game. He had not much in common with the ordinary turfite . yet, as an exponent of sporting tradition, he has no rival, though all sporting journalists have lit their torches at The Druid's fire. His sympathies were nearly universal, and, inclining always to take a kindly view of human nature, he studiously avoided writing a word to cause pain' ('Dictionary of National Biography').
