SIGNED "Wm B Osgood Field" (the compiler). The 313 untrimmed pages end with a list of the 303 illustrations within. Excellent bright clean interior being unmarked throughout. No inscriptions but for a small stylish gift inscription dated 1931 on a front blank endpaper. Tight binding. Linen spine bearing the title on a paper label which has a little wear. The paper covered boards have minor discolouration and wear. CONTENT: 'John Leech 1817 - 1864' (6 page Biography); Illustrated Books; Leechiana; Original Drawings and Sketches; List of etchings and woodcuts; List of Reference Books; Index; Illustrations (list of). Folio, an extremely good copy in the original linen-backed paper-covered boards with printed paper spine label and stamp of the Bremer Binderei on the lower pastedown, fore and lower edges uncut, slight fading to very top edges, otherwise very bright. Munich, privately printed for the author at the Bremer Presse. A comprehensive catalogue of John Leech's oeuvres including a short summary of his work and a detailed bibliography of his illustrated books, Leechiana and lists of his original drawings, sketches, etchings and woodcuts along with a list of reference books.John Leech (1817-1864), artist and illustrator, was known for his caricatures and political and satirical lithographs, working for Bentley's Miscellany and for the newly established Punch in 1841. He was particularly strong in representing the hunting field and London fashion as can be seen particularly in his illustrations for books by Surtees. He was praised by Ruskin and his work gives a real insight into the life of mid-Victorian England. Booklabel of Lucius Wilmerding by Rockwell Kent on the front pastedown.

The catalogue of Field s collection comprises published works, Leariana, diaries, original drawings and watercolours, and lithographs, engravings and woodcuts, and is preceded by a biography of Lear. Edward Lear (1812-1888] was an English landscape artist and illustrator of birds and animals who is perhaps best known as a writer of nonsense prose and verse and as the popularizer of the limerick. Lear published three volumes of bird and animal drawings, seven illustrated travel books including Journal of a Landscape Painter in Greece and Albania (1851), and four books of nonsense - A Book of Nonsense (1846), Nonsense Songs, Stories, Botany, and Alphabets (1871) which included his song The Owl and the Pussycat , More Nonsense, Pictures, Rhymes, Botany, etc. (1872), and Laughable Lyrics (1877). A posthumous collection, Queery Leary Nonsense (1911), was edited by Constance Braham Strachey.
