Illustrated by frontispiece and text figures in pen and ink. Decorated by vignettes, including head and end of chapter, by initials, by publisher's device on verso of half title and by colophon. Handsomely bound and illustrated edition of the novel of the ups and downs of clerical life by Oliver Goldsmith (c.1730-74). It was edited by Henry Austin Dobson (1840-1921), engineer, poet and essayist and illustrated by the Irish born artist, Hugh Thomson (1860-1920) whose pen and ink drawings appeared in some sixty five books.
