Couverture rigide. Etat : Très bon. Edition originale. (G-M). Duchenne de Boulogne was a pioneering French neurologist and one of the greatest clinicians of his day. He was the first to describe several nervous and muscular disorders and, in developing medical treatment for them, created electrodiagnosis and electrotherapy. He also invented an instrument to sample tissues inside the body, founding the diagnostic practice of biopsy. Duchenne summarized his work in two major treatises. His book Mecanisme de la Physionomie Humaine ou Analyse Electro-Physiologique de L'Expression des Passions (translated as The Electrical Stimulation of Muscles for Facial Expression) illustrated with photographs is considered a true incunabulum of photography and copies sell for up to $20,000. This other major work of Duchenne's (modern translation titled Physiology of Motion) appears to be even scarcer.

Aus dem Französischen übersetzt von Carl Wernicke. - Cassel & Berlin: Theodor Fischer, 1885, 8°, XXVII, (1), 663, (1) pp., mit 100 Textholzschnitten, Halbleinenband d.Zt. mit goldgeprägtem Rückentitel; feines Exemplar. First Edition in German ! "Physiologie des mouvements is unique in many respects and is worthy to rank among the great books of all time. . . . The Physiologie des mouvements, which is of great value to the neurologist, is one of the greatest books from the point of view of a functional anatomist and practical orthopedic surgeon. . . . In a lucid and simple manner, the author unfolds the action of muscles individually and in groups, emphasising their simultaneous action, balance of action with resulting motion, action produced by selected electric stimulations in normal subjects, electric stimulations in individuals who presented various types of isolated or combined paralysis. The information obtained is supplemented by anatomical dissection and anatomic experimentation on the cadaver and clinical observations. Seldom can one find a more thorough, convincing and more useful description of important phenomena. Probably no one described more completely and exhaustively the action of the muscles moving the fingers and the thumb" E. Kaplan, "Duchenne of Boulogne and the Physiologie des Mouvements", in Kagan, ed., Victor Robinson Memorial Volume, pp. 184 and 186). Erste deutsche Ausgabe. Paris, Chez J.-B. Baillière, 1855. 8°. XII, 926 pp, 108 Holzstiche, Halbledereinband d.Zt. Frist Edition! Duchenne classified the electrophysiology of the entire muscular system and summed up his findings in the above work. The application of his results to pathological conditions marks him as the founder of electrotherapy. Garrison & Morton No. 614Guillaume Benjamin Amand Duchenne (1806-1875) - "Ignored by his contemporaries, and often the subject of ridicule, Duchenne nonetheless must be regarded as one of the greatest of the early French neurologists and the founder of electrotherapy. Although he never occupied a professorial chair or even held a hospital appointment, his personal diligence and perseverance in meticulously following the course of treatment of his patients allowed him to amass a wealth of observational data that resulted in a number of fundamental neuropathological discoveries. Among his many contributions are descriptions of progressive bulbar paralysis (Duchenne's paralysis) and spinal muscular atrophy (Aran-Duchenne's disease). Duchenne was the first to employ electrical stimulation of nerves and muscles in exploring the muscular system and in the diagnosis and treatment of neurological diseases. The results of these early experiments are contained in this, his first major work." Heirs of Hippocrates "It was through the work of Duchenne that electricity came to be recognized both as a powerful means of diagnosis and as a tool for studying the physiology of muscles in the living body. Having discovered that it was possible to limit the effects of electricity to single muscles or bundles of muscle fibers, Duchenne devoted himself to experiments in which he used electrical stimulation to determine the movements of all the voluntary muscles in the body. In so doing, he not only added greatly to contemporary knowledge of normal muscle physiology, but also found that he was able to use electrical stimulation to examine and diagnose different types of partial paralysis. The first edition of Duchenne's treatise on localized electrization contains an account of his discoveries relating to the action of themuscles, sections devoted to electrical equipment and technique (includingdescriptions of Duchenne's own faradic apparatus), a discussion of the benefits of faradic (induced current) versus galvanic (direct current) stimulus, accounts of Duchenne's clinical and pathological observations, and of the application of localized electrization in therapy" Norman Garrison-Morton No. 614; Heirs of Hippocrates No. 1690; Osler 2511; Waller 2604; Norman 659; Rowbottom & Susskind, Electricity & Medicine, pp. 71-88. 2., vielf. umgearb. u. verm. Auflage. - Leipzig, J.A. Barth, 1858, 8°, VIII, 266 pp., 64 Holzschnitte, Leinenband. Vorwort.
