ABOUT THIS BOOK: This book explores how humans respond to the hypoxia of high altitudes, addressing the response of lowlanders to sudden and sustained exposure, as well as that of those living permanently at high elevations. Examines adaptation and maladaptation, acute and chronic high-altitude illnesses, and the challenges faced by lowland dwellers with preexisting medical conditions who venture to high altitude! Containing more than 3000 references and over 200 tables, charts, and graphs that support the text, High Altitude -offers an anthropological perspective on those who dwell permanently at great heights -investigates how cells sense oxygen, including arterial chemoreceptors, erythropoietin-producing tissues, and pulmonary vascular smooth muscle -discusses the role of individual organs as well as their integrated function in enabling physical and mental performance at high altitude -focuses on the additional metabolic and circulatory demands of perception, thought, and action in the brain -considers how organisms defend themselves against the stress of hypoxia -and more! Written by more than 55 contributors who are among the world's leading authorities and investigators, High Altitude is a provocative referencefor pulmonologists, physiologists, biologists, critical care specialists, internists, primary care physicians, pediatricians, and medical school students.(Publisher).

Livre
Hardback. * Updated to include all the major events since the first edition was published in 1993 * Offers an up-close-and-personal view of the world's highest mountain * Lavishly illustrated with stunning photographs For eighty years, Mount Everest has been the ultimate symbol of human endeavor. Ever since the first attempt in 1921, the world's highest mountain has served as an arena where mountaineers have played out their dreams and fears, bringing triumph and tragedy in almost equal measure. The dramas of Everest have inspired some of mountaineering's finest writing and photography. In this sumptuous anthology, climbers recount and portray their struggles to attain the summit, the moments of success and defeat, exultation and despair. All the great landmarks in Everest's history are represented. The pioneering expeditions of the 1920s and 1930s are recounted by climbers such as George Mallory and Eric Shipton. Sir Edmund Hillary tells how he and Tenzing Norgay became the first to reach the summit, via the South Col, in 1953, while Tom Hornbein describes the bravura West Ridge ascent by the Americans in 1963. Chris Bonington, Reinhold Messner, Doug Scott, and many more of mountaineering's most celebrated names also appear in this definitive collection. First published to wide acclaim in 1993, the anthology has been expanded to include the 1990s, perhaps the most dramatic decade of all. Included in the new edition are passages describing the tragedies and disasters of 1996, including an excerpt from Jon Krakauer's Into Thin Air and the extraordinary discovery of the body of George Mallory by American climbers in 1999. The book also contains Peter Gilman's own accounts of some of the mountain's most controversial episodes, such as the disputed Chinese ascent of 1960 and the enigma of the yeti. There are comprehensive, updated appendixes, including a full list of every ascent. The outcome is one of the finest mountaineering anthologies ever produced: a stirring assertion of the audacity of the human spirit in the face of challenging and perilous odds, presenting both the how of mountaineering and the why.

Soft cover. Etat : Very Good. Norman G Dyhrenfurth (leader, American Mount Everest Expedition) (illustrateur). "Climbing Everest by a route no man had ever tried before. Knowing that they could not reach the summit with time to get down. Knowing that the route they chose did not allow them to turn back or retreat. "Hornbein never admits it in this book, but he had to know that death was more probable than survival. It is an achievement in mountaineering that is in many ways unrivaled for its sheer audacity and, unless you are a climbing aficionado, largely unknown." [Neate H112: First ascent of the West Ridge and traverse down normal route] This book is the condensation of personal notes and interviews with expedition members, most notably Thomas Hornbein, MD who also was Professor and Chairman of the Department of Anesthesiology at the University of Washington School of Medicine in Seattle, Washington from 1978 to 1993. This book was designed and edited by David Ross Brower (1912?2000), who was a prominent environmentalist, mountaineer and the founder of many environmental organizations as well as serving as the first Executive Director of the Sierra Club. Norman Gunther Dyhrenfurth (1918 - 2017) was a German-Swiss-American mountaineer and filmmaker. He was the leader of this successful American Mount Everest Expedition of 1963, which placed six climbers on the summit. Paperbound book features many color photographs & maps to enhance narrative. Paperback cover shows little use, small reading creases in sunburnt spine does not affect legibility of print on spine. Interior is tight, clean and, aside from late 1960's dated inscription inside front of book, unmarked. Copyrights 1968 & 1966. Manufactured in U.S.A.
