Orange cloth-covered boards with tipped-in four-color plate on cover and title stamped in black on rear cover and spine; no dust jacket as issued. Photographs by J.H. Engström. 112 pp., with four-color plates throughout. 9-1/4 x 12 inches. New in publisher's shrink wrap. From the publisher: "To most people an airport used to represent a place of optimism. An open place, oozing with expectations and encounters. Recent world events have changed all that. Today an airport is a completely different experience. Armed police officers, restrictions and safety regulations only help to increase our feelings of insecurity. Roissy Charles de Gaulle Airport has always been a special place for JH Engström. At the age of ten he moved to Paris with his parents. Charles de Gaulle was his first contact with the world outside his native Sweden. The move created a very intense relationship to the city of Paris, but also to the Charles de Gaulle and airports in general. For this project he spent three weeks isolated in an airport hotel, photographing in and between the terminals. The airport became a place to observe identities and the history of relations. With fiction, poetry and mystery he observes it. Raising questions of social, urban and architectural dimensions.".

Förlagets guldpräglade band i grön klot. Mycket fint skick. Signerad: "J H Engström / Stockholm, 15/11-2010". [Stockholm], Journal, 2010. 8:o. 184 s. (vikta sidor). Trilingual in Swedish, French and English.

216 pp., with four-color and black-and-white plates throughout. 12-1/4 x 9-7/8 inches. New in publisher's shrink wrap. From the publisher: "Haunts can be seen as part two of a trilogy which began with Trying to Dance, JH Engström's artist's book project which was short-listed for the 2005 Deutsche Börse Photography Prize. At the back of Trying to Dance JH Engström wrote, 'I'm always looking for presence. Whenever I try, my doubts get unmasked.' These doubts and questions are prelevant in Haunts, but in this volume Engström focuses more on public spaces and life in the streets. At the center of JH Engström's pictures is a strong feeling of being in an endless present tense. The confrontation between 'now' and the photographer's memories is inevitable. And he doesn't try to separate emotions from objectivity. His images embody their questions.".

Jan Henrik Engström (born 1969) is a Swedish photographer working in the tradition of Christer Strömholm and Anders Petersen - but in his own way. H Engström was born in 1969 in Karlstad, Värmland, Sweden. He moved to Paris with his parents at the age of 10 and back to Sweden when he was 13, but spent a lot of his adolescence in Paris. In 1991 he moved back to Paris and worked as assistant to fashion photographer Mario Testino. In 1993 he went back to Stockholm to start working as assistant to documentary photographer Anders Petersen. In 1997 he graduated from the photography and film department at Gothenburg University. The same year he published his first book, Shelter. In 1998 he moved to Brooklyn, New York and started work on Trying to Dance. In 2000 he travelled throughout Europe and then moved to his native Värmland where he continues working on the Trying to Dance project. He has received numerous grants and awards since 1994. Soft cover. Etat : As New. 1st Edition. 1st Printing. Signed. Unpaginated. Published in 2013. Retrospective collection of photographs, presented in a scrapbook format as an Artist Book. One of the most beautiful art photography books of our time. The first appearance of the title in the United States. Precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent editions. Published in a small and limited first print run by Aperture Foundation as a softcover original only. A brilliant production by J. H. Engstrom: Oversize-volume format. Pictorial softcovers with black cloth overboards and white titles embossed on the spine, as issued. Photographs by J. H. Engstrom. There is no text. Brown cardboard slipcase. Printed on pristine-white, thick coated stock paper in Italy to the highest standards. The reproduction quality is exemplary in every respect. Without DJ, as issued. Presents J. H. Engstrom's "Sketch of Paris". His singularly personal homage to the most photographed city in the world. One of the few photographic projects of our time that capture what we call the Zeitgeist, the raw, contemporary moment. Which makes it unusual because the photographs were taken over a relatively long period of time. What a critic has said about Engstrom's aesthetic and practice applies: "A visual stream-of-consciousness monologue, an ongoing succession of moments that retains an importance of their own, fragments of relentlessly passing time. The impression of looking at memories, rather than documentary images, is heightened by the variety of the photographs" (Martin Jaeggi). "I can only make photographs of what I feel, of what results from my encounters with people. In this regard, my work is completely subjective. At the same time, I am interested in objectivity, in the fact that since you take photographs, you always deal with reality. And in this respect, I am not interested in subjectivity. It's a paradox" (J. H. Engstrom). Includes some of his most arrestingly lyrical and unusual nudes - of himself and others - which is, by now, an Engstrom specialty. An absolute "must-have" title for J. H. Engstrom collectors. This copy is very boldly and beautifully signed in black pen-marker on the front cover by J. H. Engstrom. It is signed directly on the cover itself, not on a tipped-in page. This title is a contemporary art photography book. This is one few such signed copies of the First Edition/First Printing (American) still available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright. A scarce signed copy thus. Lavishly illustrated with black-and-white and color plates. "Trying To Dance" was selected as one of the greatest photography books in "The Photobook". One of the most brilliant photographers of our time. A fine copy. ISBN 1597112534. Signed by Author.
