28.0 x 24.0cms, 308pp, b/w & Colour Illusts, very good+ hardcover & dustwrapper Basil Burdett convinced Keith Murdoch to stage an exhibition of French and British contemporary art in Adelaide, Melbourne and Sydney (1939). With 200 works, it featured work by Cezanne, Dali, Picasso, Modigliani and many of the other modern masters. It divided Australia's art community and the public galleries stuck the works in their basements, rather than buy and/or exhibit them during the war. This book dispels the myths that have surrounded this legendary exhibition and the evolution of modernism in Australia.
