LEJEUNE, Anthony [text by] & LEWIS, Malcolm [photographs by] [296] pp. Mayflower Books w/ jacket panels affixed to FFEP and rear inside cover 1979 First American Edition 12 1/8" x 9" An evocative book examining and celebrating the Gentlemen's Clubs of London, their buildings and their traditions. 'Clubland is another country, redolent of the past, but, for its few thousand regular inhabitants, still an important part of their daily lives; a place occupied simultaneously by highly conventional people and wildly eccentric ones; a place both luxurious and shabby, full of marvellous possessions and curious bric-a-brac accumulated over three centuries; offering splendid wine and indifferent food, servants of a kind which hardly exist elsewhere, ducal architecture and primitive equipment.' (from the blurb). Nearly 50 clubs are described and illustrated in the book, with photographs, archival material and anecdotes. Several are no longer around. A perfect gift for any member of a London Club.

A perfect gift for any member of a London Club./This book lays forth the histories of the clubs, why and how each came into being, who belongs and belonged to which, how members are chosen, and how the clubs have changed down the generations - if indeed they have. This work tells of the ambience and grace of the clubs, their privacies and eccentricities, and of the yarns, disputes and scandals to which they have given rise. Here are new and archival photographs of the clubs' interiors, ranging from the elegant to the snug, premises which are sometimes secret and quirky and sometimes grand, each unique and fitting the character and contributing to the needs and lives of its members.
