Thumb-marking present. Some brown staining to pages throughout. Visible creasing to gutter. Cracking to gutters, with exposed netting. Pages remain intact. Boards have moderate edge-wear with bumping to corners and rubbing to surfaces. Visible crushing to spine ends. Noticeable tanning to spine and edges. Small splits to spine ends. Water staining to boards. Book has a prominent forward lean.

Boards have heavy shelf wear with bumping and fraying to corners and crushing and fraying to spine ends. All surfaces tanned and sunned, particularly spine. Tear to spine cloth along rear edge.Book has slight forward lean.

Slight cracking to gutters causing binding to be loose, however pages remain attached. Pages have light tanning and foxing throughout. Pencil inscription to front free endpaper. Boards have light shelf-wear with corner bumping. Slight crushing to spine ends. Clipped jacket has heavy edgewear with areas of loss, heavy tears, chips, and creasing. Light tanning to spine and edges. Water staining to rear panel and inside front panel. Wear marks and foxing overall.

Cloth Boards. 1st edition. 8vo, pp. 298, b/w frontis portrait, previous owner's inscription and stamp front free endpaper, original red cloth boards, small splits head and tail spine and cloth frayed, 1cm split rear joint, lightly scuffed and few minor marks, cnrs worn. The author was apparently the inspiration for Kipling's 'Stalky'. He was commisioned into the army in 1884 and during WWI led an Allied force across present-day Iraq.
