In 8°; (2), CXLIX, (2 b.), 320 pp. e (2), 54 pp. Elegante legatura coeva in mezza-pelle maculata con titolo su fascetta di pelle rossa e filetti in oro al dorso. Piatti foderati con bella carta marmorizzata coeva. Tagli rossi. GM981 (Italian ed.): "Spallanzani confirmed earlier doctrines of the solvent property of the gastric juice and discovered the action of the saliva in digestion. He stated that gastric juice can act outside the body and can prevent or inhibit putrefaction.". First issued in Italian in 1780, of Spallanzani s (1729-1799) work on digestion; the first French edition was issued in Geneva in 1783. It was later translated into English (London, 1784, 1789). "Spallanzani confirmed earlier doctrines of the solvent property of the gastric juice and discovered the action of the saliva in digestion. He stated that gastric juice can act outside the body and can prevent or inhibit putrefaction. He obtains gastric juice by tying a sponge on a piece of string, then allowing it to be swallowed." - Garrison and Morton. Rif. Bibl.: per la prima opera ICCU IT\ICCU\PUVE\012056; per la seconda opera ICCU IT\ICCU\PUVE\012071.

Small 8vo, pp. vii, 102, + an inserted leaf of dedication to the Abbé Nollet. Several woodcut ornaments. Modern half calf antique, spine gilt in compartments. Inscribed in a contemporary hand in the lower margin of the title ?Madame Arouet? FIRST EDITION IN FRENCH of the Prodromo.sopra le riproduzioni animali, and the first work of Spallanzani to be published in a foreign language. See G&M 101. Spallanzani first advanced the doctrine of the regeneration of the spinal cord. He found the precise location of those cuts in earthworms which affected the segmental regenerative process, and noted regenerative capacities of remarkable complexity and repetitiveness in the land snail, salamander, toad, and frog. By decapitation of the frog he also showed that certain postures may be maintained by a reflex action of the spinal cord. ?Spallanzani established the general law that in susceptible species an inverse ratio obtains between the regenerative capacity and age of the animal. Early in 1768 he reported these findings in Prodromo.sopra le riproduzioni animali? (DSB). Prandi, Bibliografia di Lazzaro Spallanzani, p. 79: ?Of such rarity that several biographies of Spallanzani, citing this translation, give other publishers and the date as 1769? (in translation). Prandi records one copy only, in the Biblioteca dell?Archiginasio in Bologna. NUC locates three copies. Neither Prandi nor NUC record the inserted dedication leaf. The English translation appeared the following year, and later the same year Spallanzani was elected F.R.S.

(4), (L), (2), 315 pp. + two plates (4), 389 pp. + five plates (iv), 402 pp. + two plates" (iv), 394 pp. + two plates. First English edition of this highly important work - "Viaggi alle due Sicilie ed in alcune parti dell'Appenino" (1792-97) - on Vulcanology in Italy and Sicily, by the great Italian biologist and physiologist. Spallanzani was one of the first to reject spontaneous generation with arguments similar to those expressed by Pasteur nearly a century later. In 1788 Spallanzani travelled in the Two Sicilies, mainly in order to correct deficiencies in the vulcanic collection of the Museum of Natural History in Modena. Southern Italy had suffered for five years from intense eruptive and seismic activities. Messina was still in ruins and the countryside devastated. Vesuvius, near Naples, Stromboli and Vucano on the Eolian Isles, and Etna on the Island of Sicily, remained active. Spallanzani visited them all, undauntedly making several perilous ascents that involved great physical endurance. As such he became one of the founders of Vulcanology."Spallanzani (1729-1799), the illustrious professor of Pavia, Reggio, and Modena,.devoted his earlier life to animal and vegetable physiology, and was fifty years of age before he began to turn his attention to geological questions. But from that period onward he made many journeys in the basin of the Mediterranean from Constantinople to Marseilles. Of special interest were his minute and picturesque descriptions of the eruptions of Stromboli, which at not a little personal risk he watched from a crevice in the lava. His "Travels in the Two Sicilies and in some Parts of the Appennines" contained a mass of careful observations among the recent and extinct volcanoes of Italy." (Archibald Geikie in "The Founders of Geology" p. 256).

DSB XII, 56 "Lavoisier's suggestion that respiration was a form of slow combustion, with direct oxidation of carbon and hydrogen occuring in the lungs, was disputed by the french mathematician Lagrange. Spallanzani's experimental data resolved this controversy and laid the groundwork for modern conceptions of respiratory physiology."
