Livre
Hardcover. Etat : Good. This is "The Later Years of Thomas Hardy , 1892 - 1928", attributed to his second wife, Florence Emily Hardy, but actually written by Hardy himself near the end of his life. She certainly edited the book. Published in hardcover format, this is the First American Edition, printed in 1930 by the Macmillan Company; the book has numerous illustrations, including a frontispiece portrait of Hardy. The illustrations are, mostly, photographs, some of them reproduced on calendered paper; a number of them are gravure reproductions of drawings and photographs which are reproduced on a matte paper and provided with tissue guards; one can see the embossment around the gravures. Please read our full condition report below. ******************************************* This particular copy comes from the personal library of Professor Bruce Berlind, and has his inked signature with place and date (Princeton 1944). Professor Berlind, now deceased, was an accomplished poet and translator. He was especially known for his translations from the Hungarian. Berlind made numerous light, penciled underlinings and marginal marks through the text. At one point he wrote a note in the margin. I find this note quite interesting in that he was arguing with a part of the text dealing with some Bible translations. This is noteworthy : an esteemed Professor and translator taking exception to a part of the text dealing with translation, and stating his argument. ***************************************** TITLE : The Later Years of Thomas Hardy 1892 - 1928 / AUTHOR : Thomas Hardy (1840 - 1928) / Florence Emily Hardy, Editor (1879 - 1937) / IMPRINT : Macmillan Company / PLACE : New York / DATE : 1930 / EDITION : First U.S. publication. / PROVENANCE : From the library of poet - Translator Professor Bruce Berlind, deceased. / SPECIAL ATTRIBUTES ; the front free end-paper has the inked signature of Bruce Berlind, with place and date (Princeton, 1944). / PHYSICAL DETAILS : 12 illustrations, including Frontispiece (Seven are full page plate reproductions of photographs, printed on calendered paper; one is a reproduction of a drawing, and 6 are reproductions of photographs - none of these were given tissue guards. Three illustrations are gravure reproductions, all printed on stiff matte paper with tissue guards. One can see the embossments. 2 of the gravures are reproductions of photographs , and 1 - the frontispiece - is a reproduction of a drawn portrait); Contains 3 Appendices, and an Index. xii + 289 pages; approximately 6 1/4" x 9 1/4"; green silk-covered boards and spine; gilt lettering on spine and front board. Fore- and bottom-edge of text block are rough cutSans dust-jacket. ********************************************* CONDITION -- GOOD PLUS ONLY -- This is a previously owned book that shows signs of use, but which remains clean and serviceable, with the following particulars noted : EXTERIOR -- Spine is considerably darkened; spine extremities are compressed, with fraying just beginning; gilt lettering on spine has faded; front board displays weathering about the edges and a bit of damp staining (seems like it was caused by water droplet splashing); the bottom fore-edge corner tip has been bumped, with attendant small splitting of silk cloth (hence the condition grade - this seems like an impact injury from being dropped - the other corner tips being slightly rubbed , but not bumped); the rear cover has weathering about the edges (and a touch of spotting - else the binding is clean. The text-block edges are toned, else clean. / BINDING -- Solid. / interior -- The paper throughout is lightly toned; the tissues over the gravure illustrations in the text have offset toning from the gravures; the tissue has done its job, but just a touch of toning has transferred to the pages opposite. there is no toning connected to the frontispiece. Professor Berlind used a pencil to lightly underline and mark some passages marginally. These are easily erased, if one so wishes to.

Top edge gilt, photographic frontispiece, illustrated and photographic plates, index. Lightly edgeworn. "Mr. Hardy's feeling for a long time was that he would not care to have his life written at all. And though often asked to record his recollections he would say that he 'had not sufficient admiration for himself' to do so. But later, having observed many erroneous and grotesque statements advanced as his experiences, and a so-called 'Life' published as authoritative, his hand was forced" - from the Prefatory Note by the author. Biography of Thomas Hardy. Time Period 1840-1891 & 19th Century. (Biography, Diaries, Interviews, Letters, Novelists, Poets, Youth).

Hardcover. First Edition, First Printing. pp. xii, [1], 327; xi, [1], 286 + 2 pages of publisher's advertisements. Royal 8vo. Bound in lovely light green cloth over boards with gilt lettering, and circular floral motif to the centre of the front boards, and spines. Gilt top-edge. Black and white lithographed frontispieces depicting a young, and old Thomas Hardy, and accompanied with their original tissue-guards. Replete with black and white photographs, illustrations, and even a two-page lovely facsimile of a hand-written letter by the author; all accompanied with their original tissue-guards. Slightest bumping to the spine ends otherwise, no detectable flaws with the contents remaining bright, clean, and unmarked with tight, sound binding; housed in excellent dust-jackets (not price-clipped and bearing the original cost of "18/-net") showing only the slightest traces of edgewear (both dust-jackets now housed in protective mylar covers). Overall, a very handsome presentation. Rare in commerce in the first printing, and in this condition. We note from Richard Little Purdy who writes in, 'Hardy: A Bibliographical Study' (p. 265-73) that "the work [was] an "innocent deception" and he further observed that "The Early Life of Thomas Hardy is in reality an autobiography. Though Mrs Hardy's name stands on the title-page, her work was confined to a few editorial touches, and the writing is throughout Hardy's own . The Later Years of Thomas Hardy was largely written by Hardy himself under the same circumstances as The Early Life . It was not carried beyond the year 1918, however, which may give some clue to the date of composition, and the four concluding chapters are Mrs Hardy's work".
