Hardcover. Etat : VG. No Jacket. J MacFarlane (illustrateur). Not stated. Rural Australia provides the setting usually odo[pted in many of the author's books for older children. It presents a word picture of living conditiions there in the late Victorian years. Betty.the central characher, has just entered her teens and, owing to a spinal defect, is confined to a wicker wheel-chair, which enables her to join many activities with her four siblings. The story opens on a sombre note; the family's doctor father has just died. His widow.assembles her family and advises them they will all have to be united to meet the challenges and strained circumstances that will follow their father's death. The family was left virtually destitute once the debts of the father were honoured. The family moved to a small home, the widow worked as a governess at a nearby girls' college. the children looked after the cooking and household, but were considering schemes to boost the family finances. This sets the scene for their struggle to maintain a decent life style and shows how a family united in loss can survive and even prossper. As a book "Bettty and Co," also takes a different course for this author! Although running to 309 text pages, ionly 75 are cccupied by the title tale, with 12 short stories following -- their titles being Thomas. If Not The Rose, The Museum at Koonaworra, Caesar's Birthday, The Rogue Locomotive, Portraits While You Wait, The Silence Broken, .A New Lenore, Next Door, The Gate of Paradise. and Not Alway To The Strong. This is not as well-known as other Ethel Turner books but is presented by the publisher in an attractive contemporary hard cover. The book has no publication date and is illustrated throughout by b/w plates, many by J McFarlane, wijh other artists contributing. Some plates are dated 1901 and 1903 and give some guide to to publication time. The frontis is tissue protected with 12 other art plates throughout the texst, each securely placed. .While there is no list of illustrations in the preliminary pages these plates appear to be an even spread with no indications of missing images. The green hard covers are VG with gilt front and spine titles, gilt decoration of a girl center front with gilt flowers on spine, also impressed designs front and spine. Black front and back endpapers. Text block is tight and securely seated in the case, no cracking at endpapers or elsewshere . no inscriptions etc.
