Hardcover. Etat : Near Fine. Etat de la jaquette : VG+. Photos, some ART (illustrateur). Northland, NZ's nothern extremity, was the first area to be settled by Europeans, initially Missionaries, sealers, whalers and traders. The advent of organised immigration attracted many of the oriiginal pioneers there. It was, and remains, an area with a large by Maori population. When this influx of European pioneers came to the North it was stilll largely unexplored, few settlements or facilities, and at times new dangers. Among these settlers were women and children and they form the base for this study. The author, a staunch resident/advocate for the province, in this exllent study of pioneer life recalls the experiences of 44 of the women who settled there. She found that although they came from all levels of society they shared a number of "common qualities of adaptability, endurance, kindness, patience and loyalty." Complementing her splendid text is a centrally located 16 page illustrations gallery, each with multiple b/w images. Red covers with gilt spine titles are excellent as are the endpapers which depict an art pioneer home and surroundings. The right top corner of this has the only marking to the book -- the neat, small stamp of a former owner. The DJ is also top notch with cover art front panel.

Decorated Cloth. Etat : Very Good. First Edition presumed. N.d., circa 1876. (Bearing an inscription from this date plus a single copy on OCLC dated as such.) [35] pages, paginated by sections, and with sixteen full pages of colored plates, some with two illustrations, other with one. Wordsworth wrote "Lucy Gray" contained herein. "Little Ann and her mamma", by Ann and Jane Taylor, is adapted from London to New York. Other poems included are "Hector the Dog", "Frisky the Squirrel", "The Kittens' Mishap", "The Robins' Christmas Eve", "The Wolf and the Seven Kids" and "Three Little Dogs", and these titles give a good hint of the content. Appropriately the inscription shows this was a Chirstmas gift. The illustrations capture our notions of High Victorian style and children's lives. This copy is mostly clean and attractive, notwithstanding wear in the corners and the spine extremities.

4to. Additional hand coloured lithographed title, 20 hand coloured lithographed plates, three double page, each with a single page of accompanying text, subscribers leaf with woodcut border. Original green cloth, gilt with blindstamped foliate borders and central gilt urn design to the front cover, repeated in blind on the rear board. The covers a little unevenly faded with a couple of old marks, the spine has been cleverly restored. Press cuttings mounted to front and rear pastedowns. A Fine copy. With an impeccable provenance, from the library of William Wordsworth with the author's inscription "William Wordsworth Esq. from the Author" on the end paper. The author approached Wordsworth in 1843 to compose some verses for her book "Although it is now two years since Mr. Wordsworth composed them, they were written, I feel proud to say, for this volume, which was at the time contemplated. The flowers he names do not all correspond with those subsequently selected, but the reader will feel with me that any emanation from the pen of so celebrated a Bard must add charm to the book which it could not otherwise have gained." The poem "Verses composed at the request of Jane Wallas Penfold" is first published here and as far as I can trace was not reprinted until Knight's Edition of his poetical works in 1882. There are 66 subscribers listed in the volume and it would therefore seem unlikely that more than 100/125 copies were printed: certainly it is uncommon with only three copies recorded at auction over the last 50 years. A tipped in offprint from the Journal of Botany [Vol. 57. April, 1919.] quotes correspondence from the Times Literary Supplement (March 6th) where, following communication about the publication a response was received "Mr Gordon Wordsworth of The Stepping Stones, Ambleside - a grandson of the poet - writes that he possesses a copy of Madeira Flowers inscribed: "Wm. Wordsworth Esq. from the Author.".
