Folio. 14 x 10 inches. 248 pp. Title page and descriptive headings in red and black. Bound in original navy cloth, gilt, in intact pictorial dust wrapper. A very good copy, with flamboyant gift inscription on first free endpaper. Illustrated throughout by whole page colour plates, including frontispiece, numbered in text, by 171 text figures in colour and black and white, including whole page and by map. 'The Padshahnama' (History of the Emperor), written by Abd al-Hamid Lahori, is one of the greatest works made for the Mughal Emperor, Shah Jahan [1592-1666], the builder of the Taj Mahal. The volume in the Royal Library at Windsor Castle documents the first ten years of the Emperor's rule. It has seldom been exhibited and the majority of pages remain unpublished. This exhibition is therefore the only foreseeable opportunity to view at once all the illustrations to one of the world's greatest manuscripts. The catalogue of the exhibition, illustrates all the paintings and illuminations in full colour, accompanied by eye-witness accounts of the events, personalities and settings depicted. These are identified and discussed with the help of actual-sized details, comparative photographs and drawings' (adapted from Library Hub). Hardcover. Etat : Fine. 1st Edition. 34 by 22cm., 247pp., 66 colour plates & 75 duotones. Riza-yi 'Abbasi stands with Bihzad as one of the greatest of Iranian artists. As the leading painter at the court of Shah 'Abbas I (1587-1629), Riza often expressed the progressive mood of Safavid Iran in his work. During the early years of 'Abbas's Reign, when the Shah was occupied with the unification of the country, Riza's paintings and drawings depicted the young, the hope of the future state. By the 1620s he had begun to copy drawings by Bihzad, the great painter, and he continued to produce many portraits of rare insight. Each stage of Riza's development exerted enormous influence: working within the idiom he had popularised, Iranian artisits maintained a distinctive style until the end of the seventeenth century, when Western attitudes and practices inundated the traditional art of Iran. 'Rebellious Reformer' provides a complete catalogue of Riza's work and analyses the relationship of his life to his stylistic development. All available extant works signed by or attributed to Riza are illustrated in colour or duotone.
