Black and white woodblock Japanese book with stab binding, illustrated with a double page full color woodblock map of the world and three black and white city maps. 18 x 13 cm, 53 double folded leaves. Covers and paper title label worn with a little loss, corners torn with loss, string ties broken in one section but re-tied, binding still sound. Some light soiling and spotting but overall internally very good Covers a wide range of topics which were of interest to the Japanese public at the time when Japan was not "open" to the outside world. The book starts with a colour map of the world, and maps of Japan, Kyoto and Edo (Tokyo). The world map is particularly interesting as it visualises the pre-modern Japanese world view. Australia is marked as New Holland and Europe is described as Christian. The book also includes a history of Japan in chronological order, a description of the calendar, directions, and the regions, and fortunes telling in Japan.
Softcover. Etat : Good to very good. Utagawa, Kuniyoshi (Ichiyusai) (illustrateur). A selection of famous illustrations of warriors by Kuniyoshi. All leaves are illustrated with lightly coloured woodblock-prints of Japanese traditional military commanders like Minamoto no Yoshiie, Yoshitsune, and Benkei. The collection also includes one woman, a prostitute with superhuman strength. Original wrappers, with white stains, wear to extremities, slight damage to original printed title slip, two small holes to lower wrapper. Small sticker removal to front pastedown. Continuous light stain to gutter of pages. Slight thumbing. Overall good to very good. 1 v., complete. 2, 25 leaves. Text in Japanese. Used book.
Soft cover. Etat : Near Fine. Popular Edo era book for party amusements. First edition was published in 1799 in Kyoto by the same publisher. More than thirty tricks are described and illustrated by the unknown author Rifu. It is a delightful example of pre-Meiji drinking culture in Japan. For example, the book gives instructions on how to make the snakehead yokai enter the room. Complete sets are scarce. No known copies outside Japan. Text in Japanese. 3 vols. complete. 22x15,5cm. 1 v.: 1+13 ll. (28 ills); 2 v.: 10 ll. (9 ills); 3 v.: 8 leaves (5 ills). Woodblock printed book. First page of the second volume soiled. Original fukuro toji binding. Embossed paper wrappers are in near fine condition. Ink stain on the first volume. Back cover of the second volume with scratches and discolourations. Last volume has a soiling on the cover. Original title slips worn by worms.

Softcover. Etat : Near fine. Katsushika, Hokusai [illustrated by] (illustrateur). A complete twenty volume set of the Ming dynasty text `Xi Han Tong Su Yan Yi`, heavily illustrated by Hokusai and translated into Japanese. `Xi Han Tong Su Yan Yi` was a work about the Chu_Han Contention (206_202 BC), a bloody civil war that occurred in the aftermath of the collapse of the Qin dynasty. In this translation of the Chinese text Hokusai depicts the war in bloody battle scenes dynamic with movement along with landscapes, dragons, giant snakes, beautiful women, court rituals, and so on. Some scholars believe that, as Hokusai was in his eighties at the time of publication, some (or all) of the illustrations may have been painted by his daughter, Ei, a renowned artist in her own right. While the title of this work reads `Re-carved and Corrected edition` (`Teisei Hokoku`), this is actually the first edition with illustrations by Hokusai (an earlier work with the same title was published in 1787 with illustrations by Kitao Masayoshi). Complete in two parts, with ten volumes to each part. A rare complete set of this work on the most famous war in China`s history, illustrated by Japan`s most renowned artist. Original Japanese wrappers, very lightly worn, with original title slips. Slight scrape to text-block head of v.1-7. Occasional small marks and stains to text. Foxing to leaves 8 and 9 of volume 1, otherwise near fine. 20 v., complete. First part (in ten v.): 2, 9, 27, 26, 20, 21, 20, 19, 20, 22, 21, 21 leaves. Second part (in ten v.): 2, 5, 2, 16, 26, 28, 27, 27, 27, 25, 30, 24, 29 leaves. Text in Japanese. Extra shipping charges may be applied due to size and weight of item. First edition illustrated by Hokusai. Used book.
