Hardcover. Etat : VG. Etat de la jaquette : VG. Drawings, Reproductions (illustrateur). 1st. This is an important addition to the study of literature in NZ --- this one focusing on 145 years of junior fiction about NZ and dating from the early days of European settlement, although some of the earliest were true works of fiction, often penned by authors who had never visited the colony. There are 10 chapters and while mainly dealing with the subject in chronoligical order some cover more general topics, such as books for the very young. Not included are publications intended specifically for use within the education system. The criteria used for selection is explained in the author's interesting introductory note. This copy is ex-library. 300 pages including two appendices, chronological bibliography, index of titles, index of authors/illustrators, 23 b/w illustrations --- reproductions from books included in the study. Blue hard covers with silver spine titles VG with short tape marks upper and lower edges, light wear to lower edges, library stamp top FFEP also brown remains of removed issue pocket, stamp library code panel title page verso, text block otherwise excellent, no other library markings. A little used book. Colour art DJ is plastic protected and VG with two small spine base labels under the plastic.

Soft Covers. Etat : VG. No Jacket. Art, Photos, Maps, Graphs Etc (illustrateur). Reprint. This history covers a dramatic century for NZ, its original inhabitants and the arriving European settlers. At the time it opens there had been very little contact between Maori and Euopean, but this was to change very rapidly with the newcomers well established by 1840. The book begins with a reconstruction of pre-European Maori society, then follows the colonial, political, military developments, and the interaction between the two races. Land issues, which led to conflict, are studied, as are the factors that quickly changed NZ to a European style society. All aspects of this development are covered in the imposing text on the country's formative first 100 years. First printed 1989 with this reprint the following year. 433 pages including bibliography, index, art. photos, maps, graphs ect throughout. Card covers generally VG although front is creased on lower corner, few other creases, few marks and light edgewear, light wear to spine top. Text block is generally VG but there is underlining in ink and pencil with margin marks. This is mostly at the front of the text. No other inscriptions.
