"Several thousand miles south of the equator along the Pacific coast of South America, is the site of the Open City Amereida. It is a laboratory for thought and work, conceived and built by the faculty of architecture of the Catholic University of Valparaiso. Here architects, poets, artists and engineers have been engaged in one of architectural education's most radical experiments for several decades. The school has long been a destination for those seeking an alternative to conventional academic practice and teaching. Now, its significance is being felt beyond the borders of Chile and South America. Ann Pendleton-Jullian tells the story of the Open City in Ritoque, Chile, a designed city still in formation that has no master plan, no imposed ordering devices, and no hierarchical networks of infrastructure. The strange buildings placed among dunes and grasslands reflect instead the mind's translation of urban phenomena and natural phenomena relative to the construction of memory, and a process of composition that is not dependent on stylistic precedents, drawing boards, or academic discourse. Teaching takes place on site and employs poetic methods to activate the design process; the endeavour is considered more important than the result. More than 100 photographs are included, capturing the spirit of the place and of its architecture. Pendleton- Jullian discusses influences behind the Open City - the work and working methods of Surrealist French poets, the words and creative attitude of Le Corbusier, the heritage of the South American landscape and culture.,." -.

orig.boards Minor rubbing. VG., dustwrapper. 24x15cm, x,344 pp. "In 1996, the United States Social Security fund is huge and in trouble. The United Kingdom has experimented with the voluntary contracting out of pensions to the private sector. Chile has privatized its public pension system. Australia has adopted a means-tested public pension system. Japan has the earliest retirement age of any advanced economy; it also has the highest rate of labour force participation by elderly men. "Can We Afford To Grow Older?" provides a comprehensive, up-to-date survey of the implications of population ageing in these and other OECD countries relative to a range of specific interrelated issues - Social Security schemes, employer pensions, educational attainment, wage growth and distribution, economic productivity, consumption, savings, retirement, and health care - all within a framework for modelling and discussing policy. Richard Disney adopts a "life-cycle" view of the world which recognizes that individuals often make plans with a forward-looking perspective across the stages of childhood, the peak of economic productivity, and retirement. He stresses the existence of overlapping generations and the reality of generational transactions (which include tax and transfer systems, bequests and charity to the elderly). And he assumes intertemporal optimization as a useful unifying basis for analyzing social security, private pension schemes, lifetime labour-supply decisions, consumption and saving.,." - Publisher's description. orig.cloth Minor rubbing. An ink mark to bottom page-edge. VG. 24x15cm, xiv,220 pp. "Drawing on ideas from cognitive linguistics, connectionism, and perception, "The Human Semantic Potential" describes a connectionist model that learns perceptually grounded semantics for natural language in spatial terms. Languages differ in the ways in which they structure space, and Reiger's aim is to have the model perform its learning task for terms from any natural language. The system has so far succeeded in learning spatial terms from English, German, Russian, Japanese and Mixtec. The model views simple movies of two-dimensional objects moving relative to one another and learns to classify them linguistically in accordance with the spatial system of some natural language. The overall goal is to determine which sorts of spatial configurations and events are learnable as the semantics for spatial terms and which are not. Ultimately, the model and its theoretical underpinnings are a step in the direction of articulating biologically based constraints on the nature of human semantic systems. Along the way Reiger takes up such substantial issues as the attractions and liabilities of PDP and structural connectionist modelling, the problem of learning without direct negative evidence, and the area of linguistic universals, which is addressed in the model itself. Trained on spatial terms from different languages, the model permits observations about possible bases of linguistic universals and interlanguage variation" - Publisher's description. Minor rubbing. orig.cloth Minor rubbing. A small ink mark to top page-edge. VG., dustwrapper. 24x17cm, xx,511 pp. "In 'The Art of Causal Conjecture', Glenn Shafer lays out a mathematical and philosophical foundation for probability and uses it to explain concepts of causality used in statistics, artificial intelligence and philosophy. The various disciplines that use causal reasoning differ in the relative weight they put on security and precision of knowledge as opposed to timeliness of action. The natural and social sciences seek high levels of certainty in the identification of causes and high levels of precision in the measurement of their effects. The practical sciences - medicine, business, engineering and artificial intelligence - must act on causal conjectures based on more limited knowledge. Shafer's understanding of causality contributes to both of these uses of causal reasoning. His language for causal explanation can guide statistical investigation in the natural and social sciences, and it can also be used to formulate assumptions of causal uniformity needed for decision making in the practical sciences. Causal ideas permeate the use of probability and statistics in all branches of industry, commerce, government and science. "The Art of Causal Conjecture" shows that causal ideas can be equally important in theory. It does not challenge the maxim that causation cannot be proven from statistics alone, but by bringing causal ideas into the foundations of probability, it allows causal conjectures to be more clearly quantified, debated and confronted by statistical evidence" - Publisher's description. VG. 24x15cm, x,311 pp. "If people change radically as a result of mental disturbance or brain damage or disease, how should we acknowledge that change in the way in which we repsond to them? And how should society and the law acknowledge that change, particularly in cases of multiple - personality and manic - depressive disorders? This book addresses these and a cluster of other questions about changes in the self through time and about the moral attitudes we adopt in the face of these changes. The result is a broad- ranging interdisciplinary discussion at the boundaries of psychiatry, philosophy, law and social policy. Theories of personal identity are applied to, and clarified in light of, the appearance of multiple selves in a variety of personality and identity disturbances. Divided minds force us to clarify our thinking about human subjectivity, Radden points out, and when they result in a succession of "selves", they provoke interesting ethical and legal issues. Radden provides a clear and thorough discussion of basic issues faced by clincians and philosophers contending with the unity of consciousness and personal identity, particularly in the area of dissociative disorders, where issues of unity of consciousness have a direct impact on clinical and forensic decisions. Part 1 takes up the divisions and heterogeneities associated with the normal self and then with the pathological self and identifies a "language of successive selves.,." - Publisher's description. orig.cloth Minor rubbing. VG., dustwrapper. 24x15cm, x,558 pp. "Generalized financial volatility is capitalism's Achilles' heel. And nowhere is the problem of controlling such volatility more acute than in monetary and exchange rate relationships across countries - the central theme of this book. "The Rules of the Game" brings together essays, written over the course of 30 years, that analyze and compare a wide variety of important international monetary regimes. These range from the establishment of the gold standard in the 19th century through Bretton Woods, the dollar standard, floating exchange rates, the European Monetary System, to current proposals for reforming world monetary arrangements. The essays specify precisely the rule of the game for each international monetary regime - past, present and future. For ease of reference, the book offers boxed summaries of each set of rules and then discusses their advantages and disadvantages from the gold standard down to the author's proposal for a common monetary standard for the 21st century. Part 2 assesses each monetary regime's success in stabilizing prices and exchange rates, while fostering international trade. Part 2 addresses a central question each country faces: what are the benefits of giving up exchange- rate flexibility to join a common monetary standard? Part 3 focuses on overall monetary reform for limiting financial volatility and exchange- rate crises in the next century - including whether or not Western Europe should adopt a common currency.,." - Publisher's description.
