hardcover. 2012 First Edition. 248pp, 240 colour photos, 25 archival black & white images, 21 route maps, hardback, New in dustwrapper, signed by Richard Sale. This new book looks at the development of climbing on the world s highest mountains the 14 whose summits stand above the 8000 metre contour. Though concentrating on the new millennium, from 2000 to 2011, with an epilogue on 2011, the book also covers the first ascent of the mountains, and the new routes climbed between the first ascent and 1999. A sequel to On Top of the World, published in 2000 which dealt with the discovery and early climbing history of the mountains, the book also uses new material which has come to light over the last decade to re-appraise the first ascents on Annapurna, Broad Peak and K2. Illustrated with stunning images for the new routes established during the new millennium, the book also includes archival shots from the early history of the mountains. These archival shots include first ascent shots from two of the mountains which had not been made available for the earlier book. The book is completed with data on the mountains provided by co-author Eberhard Jurgalski, who maintains the world s most up-to-date database on these (and other) mountains. The data include all climbers who have summitted all 14 mountains (a figure which now stands at an astonishing 28) as well as those who are nearing the complete set. Sadly some of the latter have died in the attempt and will never achieve their goal. Printed in the UK to a high quality. Glacier Books are experienced and professional booksellers. We take pride in offering carefully described books and excellent customer service.

Hardcover. Etat : New. Etat de la jaquette : New. 'Short listed for the TWS authored book of the year 2023' The Peregrine Falcon' is a comprehensive 528-page book on this most iconic raptor which is richly illustrated with 150 color images and 235 figures, aimed at bringing our scientific knowledge of the species bang up to date under one cover. The book investigates all aspects of Peregrine life, from plumage, through diet, population dynamics, breeding and survival. Falcons are iconic aerial apex predators sometimes held in mystical regard, occasionally elevated to the status of myth and legend. The book starts with consideration of ancient history of birds when dinosaurs ruled the Earth and traces the relationship of Man and Falcon as seen in painted images from ancient Egypt and stone carvings on abandoned Hittite stone walls. Peregrinesbreed on all continents apart from Antarctica and the authors have collected data from across that vast range; providing information on each of the 17 subspecies (18 if the AustralianF.p. submelanogenysis separate fromF.p. macropus, and 19 if the Barbary Falcon is really a Peregrine form), as to diet, distribution and physical characteristics. Modern technology (inertial measurement units built by RS)and analyses of breathing, bone structure and eyesighthas been used to study the flights, particularly the stooping hunts which have made Peregrines famous as arguably the fastest creature on the planet. The physics of flight and stooping speed is rigorously assessed using basic scientific principles, and a detailed analysis of eye biology, together with observational empirical evidence, allows the authors to suggest greater Peregrine visual acuity than has previously been claimed by the scientific community. In the second half of the last century the need to increase food production led to the widescale application of chemicals on farmland. But the chemicals had a disastrous effect on Peregrine Falcons, causing both the breaking of eggshells and the killing of adult birds. Everywhere the chemicals were used the Peregrine population fell sharply. Alerted by both amateur and professional ornithologists to an impending catastrophe, governments banned the chemicals. Slowly the Peregrine population began to rise, in part prompted by the bird's remarkable ability to adapt. In parts of its range the falcon realized that buildings could be utilized as make-shift cliffs for breeding. And where humans congregated, pigeons flourished. That combination of potential breeding sites and high densities of a preferred prey meant an increase in urban living for the resourceful Peregrine, and numbers climbed steadily. The falcons' arrival in town increased human interest. Nest boxes were provided and video cameras were installed to watch Peregrine family life. Added to its fabulous flying abilities and renowned speed, the falcon that had once been seen only by those who sought it out in remote, wild places, has becomea star of local CCTV. This book includes data and photographs from several UK nest sites, both urban (a medieval bell tower and a modern, London hospital) and a Scottish wild country eyrie studied in detail in 2022. Etat : New. 368, col photos. . HB. NEW. . During the 1950s it was believed that the breeding population of Eurasian Hobbies in the UK was no more than 100 pairs. In the years since, the population estimate has risen, though the elusive nature of the falcon means that it is still not clear whether Hobbies remain the least populous of the four British breeding falcons or if its breeding population has now surpassed both the Merlin and the Peregrine. But what is definitely true is that the Hobby has a 'jizz' like no other raptor, its wonderfully fast and agile flight, seen to perfection as it pursues dragonflies and other flying insects, or when chasing avian prey, captivating all who witness its hunting skills.Hobbies are also remarkable for being one of the very few British breeding birds that migrate south of the Equator, the falcons spending more time in Africa than they do in the UK. These long migratory journeys cover thousands of miles and may involve a crossing of the Sahara Desert as well as the Equatorial Rain Forest. Even more remarkable, young Hobbies make the long journey south just a month or so after hatching, flights that they start many days after their parents have already departed. The Eurasian Hobby investigates all aspects of the Hobby's life cycle, including breeding and the falcon's flight abilities, that have not been studied in such detail before.
