First French edition of Faraday's famous paper "On some new Electro-Magnetical Motion, and on the Theory of Magnetism. By Michael Faraday, Chemical Assistant in the Royal Institution. (1821)", recording one of the most influential discoveries in physics in the 19th Century, as Faraday here, as the very first, showed how to CONVERT THE ELECTRICAL AND MAGNETIC FORCES INTO CONTINUAL MECHANICAL MOVEMENT, thus creating the first electric motor, using the principle of electromagnetic rotation. In the first paper he introduced for the first time the concept of "LINE OF FORCE" and hereby deliniating "a picture of the universe as consisting of fields of various types, one that was more subtle, flexible, and useful than the purely mechanical picture of Galileo and Newton. The FIELD UNIVERSE was to be recognized with Maxwell half a century later and with Einstein, after an interval of another halfcentury."(Asimov)."Ever since Hans Christian oersted's announcement of the discovery of electromagnetism in the summer of 1820, editors of scientific journals had been inundated with articles on the phenomenon. Theories to explain it had multiplied, and the net effect was confusion. Were all the effects reported real ? Did the theories fit the facts ? It was to answer these questions that Phillips turned to Faraday and asked him to review the experiments and theories of the past months and separate truth from fiction,.Faraday agreed to to undertake a short historical survey. His entusiasm was aroused in September 1821, when he turned to the investigation of the peculiar nature of the magnetic force created by an electrical current. Oersted had spoken of the "electrical conflict" surrounding the wiree and had noted that "this conflict performs circles".Yet as he experimented he saw precisely what was happening. Using a small magnetic needle to map the pattern of magnetic force, he noted that oneof the poles of the needle turned in a circle as it was carried around the wire. He immediately realized that a single magnetic pole would rotate unceasingly around a current-carrying wire so long as the current flowed. He then set about devising an instrument to illustrate this effect. His paper "On some new Electro-Magnetical Motion, and on the Theory of Magnetism" appeared in the 21 October 1821 issue of the "Quarterly Journal of Science" (The paper offered in the first French edition). It records the first conversion of electrical into mechanical energy. It also contained the first notion of the line of force."(DSB IV, pp. 533).

Etat : Very Good. Small quarto (203 × 152 mm), 1 page on the letterhead of 'Combe Florey House, Combe Florey, nr Taunton' (printed in red on blue paper). One horizontal crease where folded for posting, with light handling creases and marks elsewhere; small chip and faint paperclip mark to one corner; in very good condition. The letter reads in full: '25th January 1958 | Dear Sir Ralph | Thank you awfully for lending me this. It was of the greatest interest and help. I have read a dozen or more of these memoirs lately, of men killed in the first war. There is no one I can think of in my generation who could have inspired so much affection and left so complete a loss as the men of yours. There is no doubt in my mind that the stock deteriorated and is deteriorating further. Please do not trouble to acknowledge this. Yours sincerely | Evelyn Waugh'. Sir Ralph Dolignon Furse (1887-1973) was twice mentioned in dispatches and awarded the DSO with bar during the First World War; he later had a distinguished career in the Colonial Office. The publication referred to in this letter is 'D.R. Brandt: Some of His Letters' (John Murray, 1920), for which Furse had supplied an introduction. This is part of correspondence relating to Waugh's 'The Life of the Right Reverend Ronald Knox' (1959), a biography of the Catholic theologian and author of detective fiction who was at Eton with Furse and later shared lodgings with him at Oxford. Furse has made several annotations to the letter in red ink. Beside Waugh's reflections on the generation of men who fought in the First World War he has written 'The Great Generation'. Elsewhere he clarifies that the letter relates to Knox (RAK) and Brandt (DRB).

Softcover/Paperback. Etat : Very Good. MYSTERY TALES #40. Atlas/Marvel Comics, 1956. Comic used prominently in a scene of the popular ABC-TV program 'Lost.' First Atlas art by Steve Ditko! ABOUT MYSTERY TALES #40: Though there are many great issus of this Atlas/Marvel title, Mystery Tales #40 stands out for two key reasons: (1) It's the first work done at Atlas by legendary comic-book artist Steve Ditko (alongside Journey Into Mystery #33), who soon became instrumental in the creation and development of Spider-Man and other key Marvel superheroes. And (2), Mystery Tales #40 gained a special mystique when it was featured prominently in a scene of the acclaimed TV drama 'Lost.' HOW MYSTERY TALES #40 WAS USED IN 'LOST': Mystery Tales #40 appears in 'Lost' Season Four, Episode #11, which is titled ?Cabin Fever? and originally ran May 8, 2008 on ABC-TV. Since then it has become highly sought-after by 'Lost' fans, regularly selling for multiples of guide value. The scene where Mystery Tales #40 appears involves a flashback: Richard Alpert visits a 5-year-old John Locke in the year 1961, showing up at his house under the pretense that he's seeking a gifted child to attend a special school. Alpert first must conduct a test (referred to as 'the Dali Lama test') to find out if Locke is ready, so he places six objects on a table and asks Locke to choose one of them. The objects include a baseball glove, a knife, a leather-bound 'Book of Laws,' a compass, a container of sand, and Mystery Tales #40. Locke chooses the knife, and Alpert realizes Locke is not ready (perhaps an indication of Locke's fitness as a future caretaker of the island), and abruptly exits the room. HOW THE MYSTERY TALES #40 STORIES TIE IN WITH 'LOST' MEANINGS: 'Lost' fans have pored over Mystery Tales #40 and found numerous parallels between the comic's stories and the plotlines and themes of 'Lost.' (Soon after the comic appeared on the show, several ardent fans published a blog about their quest to track down a copy of Mystery Tales #40 and hopefully unravel clues to the TV show's mystery.) To begin with, the cover art depicts a distressed-looking man sitting in an airplane and looking at the window at a hidden city -- or as the text says, 'The Hidden Land!' This scenario pretty much sums up the entire 'Lost' premise of people on an airplane ending up in a mystery location. Not only does the title story echo 'Lost,' but so do each subsequent story. It's almost as if the show's creators, J.J. Abrams and Damon Lindelof, had used Mystery Tales #40 as part of their 'Lost' bible when conceiving the storyline. Such stories as 'The Warning Voice,' 'The Crossroads of Destiny,' and 'March has 32 Days' involve time travel, recurring incidents at airports, parallel realities and other science-fiction concepts that define the 'Lost' mythos. ('March Has 32 Days' was specifically referenced in the Lost ARG Dharma Initiative Recruiting Project.) Even the story about the statue seems to echo the giant foot statue seen at a remote beach location of the 'Lost' island. Condition is VG-, small tear at middle top cover. Staple pulls but cover is attached at both staples. Complete, no restoration.

Second edition in English, 4to, pp. 69, [4]; mimeographed; very good in original printed wrappers. Errata sheet laid in. This copy with a presentation from the author dated April, 1973. Three copies of this edition in OCLC. Short stories by The Phong, the Vietnamese poet and novelist, born in 1932, who started writing in Hanoi in 1952 "in the first days of the Vietminh." In 1953 he embarked on a career of journalism. He moved to Saigon before the fall of Dien Bien Phu in 1954 where he wrote film reviews and other material on a contractual basis. He is the author of three novels (2 written in Hanoi, and another in Saigon), and in September of 1964 he became a press officer of the Minister of Information which brought him in contact with many important people in both the literary as well as the political scene. From March 1965 to the end of 1966 he was a lecturer in politics in the Vung Tan Cadres Training Center. He remains a creative force in Vietnam to this day and is, at the time of this cataloguing, in a dispute with Jeff Bezos and Amazon over copyright infringement.

Publisher's pale blue boards with black lettering to the spine and dark blue end-papers. Boards a little rubbed to the edges of the spine and slightly darkened to the spine itself overall a nice VG+ copy. The book is inscribed on the verso of the dedication page: "To/ Colin & Denise/ with love/ from/ Victor". In the RARE D/W priced 7/6 net to the spine as called for. Unusually the D/W is made up of a highly unusual and very fragile printed glassine. The VG++ D/W has a crease to the front panel with just a touch of minor edge wear to the extremities but is overall a lovely example. This book has been part of a collection of detective fiction for many years. A rare survival given the fragility of the D/W. Scarce with these attributes. Photographs/scans available upon request. First edition. Signed by the artist. Original printed cardboard with stapled cotton ties. Photographic artist's book documenting New York's Broadway. 249 images laid out horizontally, three images to a panel, on 83 individual panels, each attached end-to-end so that it becomes an uninterrupted continuum of street views tracing New York City's most celebrated thoroughfare as it travels the length of Manhattan from its southernmost point at The Battery all the way to the Spuyten Duyvil. With the Manhattan bus map inserted to the rear as called for. A very good copy of a delicate production with a little rubbing and spotting to the extremities. Folded out in full the contents extend to 99 feet (30 metres). One of only 200 copies. Signed by Henderikse in pencil on the upper cover. Broadway's binding and format is quite evidently modelled on Ed Ruscha's 1971 book Dutch Details which he had published as a project related to Sonsbeek 71 at the Groninger Museum. This exhibition, which also included Henderickse's work, focused on site-specific work, non-traditional media such as artists' books, and other new forms to which the era's conceptually oriented art practices were giving rise. • Hardcover. Etat : gut. 2014.
