This remarkable catalogue was published on the occasion of the Exhibit "Arts Primitifs dans les Ateliers d'Artistes," held in Paris at the Musée de l'Homme, in 1967. Its main goal was to uncover the breadth of the phenomenon of primitivism in art. This catalogue is splendidly illustrated throughout with158 photogravures depicting fine examples of primitive art from America, Africa, Asia, and Oceania. Minor shelf wear. Previous owner's bookplate on inside of front wrap, and signature on front free endpaper. Text in French. DJ in overall good+, wrappers and interior in very good condition.

First Edition. 1.0 kg; not paginated, (the text block is 1.7 cm thick), illustrated photographically, by Josà Oster, with the exception of plate number 50 which was by Adolf Studly. There are 158 black-and-white images in the catalogue, with the introductory section of the book being a list of the artists, and their comments on their relationship with the arts of black Africa, Oceania, pre-Columbian America and "archaique" Japan (I cannot quite get the flavour of the word to translate although it probably means pre-contact with the West Japan). The book is a softcover binding, with self attached photographic illustrated wrappers and fold over flap's. There is a slight rubbing of both top and bottom edges, but otherwise the book is in very good condition. Please note the text of the book is in French. Size: 4to 9¾" - 12" tall.
