Illustrated with stunning black and white illustrations by Shrimati Arnakali E. Carlile, 304pp, very good copy in trifle worn dustjacket. The second in Ghose's autobiographical writings, this book traces his life after leaving school and his departure for Calcutta to join the university. "It is part of his method, however, and part of the charm of his book, that he should not treat events chronologically. He jumps from subject to subject from the fourth century BC to talk of contemporary politics; from an account of the picturesque Santal villagers to Hindu mythology. The drama of his story is supplied by the failure of monsoon to break at its appointed season and the consequent fear of famine.".
