First English language edition. 8vo, 198 pp, bound in the publisher's original yellow cloth titled in red at the spine. Photographically illustrated dust jacket. The first English language edition, translated into English and with a preface by Barbara Wright. A gorgeously designed book, one of the most popular that the press issued. Of special note are the dust jacket, illustrated with fragmented rectangular portions of a photograph of Queneau, and the title page - printed in two colors, with the original french changed to English in red ink - and the dust jacket copy which reads "FOR BLURB SEE PAGE 56." This is a very good, with old tape ghosts to the endpapers and some minor dust soiling to top edge, but otherwise very bright and square, in a near fine dust jacket that shows some minor dust soiling and a faint area of discoloration at heel.

Hardcover with Dust Jacket. Etat : Very Good+. Etat de la jaquette : Very Good+. S. T. [Stefan Themerson] (illustrateur). First Edition. 12mo. Pp.198. Translated by Barbara Wright. Yellow cloth, titles stamped in red on the spine. Leaf edges mildly age toned and transfer to endpapers, mild spine sag and stains to lower edge. In the photo illustrated dust jacket printed in red and black with price 18/- intact on the front flap. Jacket spine and edges a trifle darkened, light edge-wear. A humorous experiment in fiction, the story of a confrontation in a Paris bus told in 99 different ways. And a masterful transformation into English: Queneau had encouraged Barbara Wright to take on this "impossible" translation full of French puns, idioms and greater challenges. She also provides an insightful, witty preface. With chapter initial drawings and jacket design by "S. T." (publisher Stefan Themerson). Gaberbocchus specialized in such experiments in language with complimentary design. Dust jacket is now preserved in a removable, clear archival sleeve.

Hardcover. Etat : Very Good. Etat de la jaquette : Very Good. 1st Edition. First edition. Small octavo; 198pp.; yellow cloth, in dust jacket. Translated from the French by Barbara Wright, who has signed, dated, and briefly inscribed the base of the title page. The first English-language edition of Queneau's OULIPO masterpiece, which consists of 99 versions of an anecdote about a young man who gets jostled on the bus and later receives a piece of fashion advice from a friend. Wright was forced to take creative liberties when dealing with "untranslatable" sections--for instance, those using French tenses for which no English equivalent exists. The results owe much of their success to Wright's own wit and linguistic gifts; Queneau declared himself "seized with inexpressible astonishment" at the strength of her efforts. Wright has inscribed this copy to Cornelia Schaeffer, the maiden name of Cornelia Bessie. Bessie spent her entire career working as an editor in the publishing industry, often alongside her husband Michael, one of the founders of Atheneum Books. The couple remained at Atheneum for over fifteen years, before returning to Harper & Row, where they later founded their own imprint, Bessie Books. Mild soiling to board edges. Light foxing to textblock edges. Light foxing/off-setting to endpapers. Else very good in a very good minus jacket showing moderate soiling/browning, and fading to the publisher's name at base of spine panel. A reasonably presentable copy of this high point of French experimental literature, with a compelling association to the world of American publishing. Inscribed by Author(s).

Offsetting/tanning to both sets of end-papers otherwise a VG+ copy in an age-darkened attractive like D/W. A collection of 99 retellings of the same story about a minor brwal on a Paris bus. Each told in a different style to absurd effect. Translated from the original French by Barbara Wright and with a preface by her. A real literary oddity and seemingly a scarce book in first edition format. The first translation of Raymond Queneau's 'untranslatable' Exercices de Style.
