Cloth. Etat : Near Fine. Etat de la jaquette : Very Good. None stated (illustrateur). The second edition of this work featuring a collection of letters from Jane Austen, in the original scarce dust wrapper. The second edition.Illustrated with a frontispiece depicting artwork by Cassandra Austen, 7 full page illustrations and 20 plates. Collated complete. In the publisher's original cloth with the original clipped scarce dust wrapper. This work features a collection of letters written by Jane Austen to her sister Cassandra and others, collected and then edited for this work by R. W. Chapman. Cassandra was a amateur watercolour painter and created the frontispiece painting of her sister. These letters have helped historians figure out the life of Austen however as Cassandra destroyed most of her other letters from her sister in order to keep details of her life private, causing much of Janes life to be lost to history. In the publisher's original cloth. Externally lovely with slight marks to the rear boards and very light spotting and slight offsetting to the rear free endpaper. The wrap is generally smart with sunning to the spine, marks to the boards, small chips and small closed tears to the head and tail and the odd small tidemark to the spine. Offsetting and the odd spot to the verso. Internally firmly bound with clean and generally bright pages. Postcard with photograph of Jane Austen's grave loosely inserted. Near Fine. book.

Internally, the five novels have a small bookplate on the front paste down but otherwise the books are clean and bright with some toning to the free endpapers and a touch of spotting to the folding map at the rear of both volumes of letters and Northanger Abbey. Hardcover. Etat : Very good +. Etat de la jaquette : Good + and Very Good. First Edition, First Printing. A Very Good + copy of the first edition, first printing, in the Publisher's original boards covered with marbled paper which also provides the turn-ins, and showing blue spines with white labels lined, lettered, numbered, and decorated in black and with a pencil notation to each volume's front pastedown. (An extra spine label is tipped in near the rear of each volume. Each volume's leading board corners are rubbed and the spine ends to each volume are pushed. The leaves of each volume remain rather clean and host numerous illustrations and Volume I contains an informative Introduction, images of which can be found at our proprietary listing as can images of all four hinges. Volume I's front hinge is cracked and the remaining three are rather solid. The volumes are richly illustrated and include one reproduced image said to have been from a work by Cassandra. The dust jackets are worn, have some separation partially repaired by archival tape applied to the verso, and missing a large piece to the spine panel of the jacket for Volume I. In spite of such damage, the dust jackets are EXCEEDINGLY RARE.
