Dust jacket is in a protective sleeve, un clipped priced 63s on flap, a little creasing to back cover. Yellow cloth spine, with gilt titling, over paper covered boards. Blue marbled end papers. No inscription. 512 pages clean and tight. A retrospective article on Leslie Fiedler by Richard Kostelanetz (New York Times Book Review) referred to Love and Death in the American Novel as `one of the great, essential books on the American imagination . an accepted major work.' The book views in depth both American literature and American character from the time of the revolution to the present. From it there emerges Professor Fiedler's once scandalous - now increasingly accepted -judgment that American literature is incapable of dealing with adult sexuality and is pathologically obsessed with death. In his preface to this new edition, the author says: `It is my sense of the continuing relevance and immediacy of this study which has impelled me to recast and re-issue it.' The Times Literary Supplement described the earlier edition as `a powerful achievement'. Other reviewers wrote: `Dr Fiedler's witty, exasperating, energetic, penetrating book will prove indispensable. . . a high level of scholarship and intelligence.' Spectator `In the novel, where the sexual theme is so prominent and often central, it is likely that psycho-analysis will find itself on home ground. For my part, I believe that Mr Fiedler has made brilliant use of it in this study.' Listener `Something of a classic . witty and arresting . He has contrived to make the American heritage less wholesome, but far more interesting than once seemed likely.' Encounter. Size: 8vo.

Milano, Longanesi & C., collana «I marmi», volume 13, 1963, Prima edizione. Ottimo esemplare.
