Reprint. Octavo (23cm). Brown cloth stamped in gilt and blind; brown endpapers; [xvi],608,20pp; 20-page publisher's catalogue at rear; folding frontispiece, folding map at rear with routes traced in red, black and white illustrations. Rubbed, lightly sunned at spine, front hinge cracked through: Good only. An account of the Livingstone brothers' exploration of the Zambesi river, based heavily on Charles' journals. The expedition was highly expensive, resulted in multiple deaths, yielded relatively little new geographical or scientific information, and David Livingstone's "plans to check the slave trade had come to nothing" (ODNB). Livingstone's activism after his journey did result in the creation of the UMCA. Despite the 1865 date on the title page, this copy is clearly a much later issue from the original publisher, as demonstrated by the 1877 publisher's catalogue and the presence of blind- rather than gilt stamping on the front board (first edition copies were stamped in gilt). HOWGEGO IV L34. MENDELSSOHN p.915-6.

Hardcover. Etat : Good. 1st Edition, Illustrated Edition. "Narrative of an Expedition to the Zambesi and its Tributaries, and of the Discovery of the Lakes Shirwa and Nyassa, 1858-1864" by David and Charles Livingstone. 1866 1st American edition; Harper & Brothers; New York. The book features 36 in-text illustrations and full-page engravings (including a two-page frontispiece engraving of a "Bird's-Eye View of the Great Cataracts of the Zambesi, and of the Zigzag Chasm below the Falls through Which the River Escapes"), as well as a large fold-out map of Dr. Livingstone's travels at the back. From the Preface: "It has been my object in this work to give as clear an account as I was able of tracts of country previously unexplored, with their river systems, natural productions, and capabilities; and to bring before my countrymen, and all others interested in the cause of humanity, the misery entailed by the slave-trade in its inland phases - a subject on which I and my companions are the first who have had any opportunities of forming a judgment. The eight years spent in Africa since my last work was published have not, I fear, improved my power of writing English; but I hope that whatever my descriptions want in clearness or literary skill may in measure be compensated by the novelty of the scenes describe, and the additional information afforded on that curse of Africa, and that shame, even now, in the nineteenth century, of a European nation - the slave-trade." Here are a few examples of the contents: Second Portuguese Expedition after Gold Mines; Repulsed by Large Bodies of Natives; The Fatality of the Murderer Attends the Slave-Trade; Mouths of the Zambesi; Concealed to Deceive English Cruisers; Scenery of the River; Country in a State of War; Atrocities of Mariano; Birds and Beasts met with on the River; Peculiarity of Baobab Trees; Ravages of Smallpox; Superstitions about Mangoes, Coffee, and Rain-Making; Case of Voluntary Slavery; Elephant and Crocodile Schools of Medicine; Dice Doctors and their use as Detective Police; Coal, Gold and Iron; Hippopotamus Flesh; Sunstroke; Morumbwa Cataract; Native Musicians and their Instruments; Christmas in Tropical Dress; African Fever; First Intercourse with Unknown People; Beer Drinkers; Moon Blindness; Evil Effects of Contact with Slaves; Cockroaches as Aids to Banting; Palm Wine; Musquitoes; Confessions of an Old Slave Dealer; Native Travelers' Mode of Making Fire; Language of Ants; Rogue Monkey Respected; The Women, their Appearance and Ornaments; Gipsy Bellows in Africa; Victoria Falls; Albinos - Human and Hippopotamic; Skeletons; Young Women up for Sale; Native Language; Witchcraft, or Influence of Plants; Filing the Teeth and Tattooing; Slave-Hunters' Mode of Attack; Polygamy; Employments of Women; Cause of the War in America.and much more. Condition: There is a thin, 2" stain line below the title on the spine; small cloth tears at the cover corners; the top and bottom edges of the spine are worn. Tight binding with no cracks. The fold-out map at the back is present, but has torn away at the inner edge and is detached. The text pages are in nice condition - mostly clean with only some mild foxing here and there (though there is heavier foxing to the front and rear end papers). The blank page facing the 1st Preface page has 9 lines written in old handwriting in pencil about "Dr. Kirk" (Sir John Kirk, who was an English naturalist and companion to David Livingstone). There is an old bookplate affixed to the front pastedown. Overall the book is in Good- condition due to the detached map.

Hardcover. Etat : Very Good. No Jacket. First American Edition. New York: Harper & Brothers, Publishers, 1866. The Scottish missionary David Livinstone (1813-1873) was one of several famous explorers, including Burton, Speke, and Baker, who shared the Victorian obsession with discovering the sources of the Nile. His brother Charles (1821-1873) likewise had his health broken by Africa. This is a Very Good copy of the First American Edition. Red cloth binding with black titling on the spine. Clean text; 2-page illustration of the Great Cataracts of the Zambesi, xxii, 638 pages, fold-out map, and a six-page publisher's catalog of "Books of Travel and Adventure" (including two titles by Sir Richard Burton). Several discreet chops from former-owner and a stamp on the rear paste-down. There is light rubbing to the margins and the spine has darkened. While the lettering is readable, it is a bit obscure. Other than these minor defects, a solid copy of this important book. First American Edition. Hard Cover. Very Good/No Jacket. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall.

In 1857, Livingstone resigned from the London Missionary Society and accepted the position of British Consul at Quilimane; at the same time he agreed to lead an expedition, financed by £5000 from the British Government, to chart the course of the Zambesi and investigate the agricultural potential and natural resources of the region. In private Livingstone had hoped that the expedition would ultimately lead to the founding of an English colony in Central Africa. However, the expedition was plagued by supply problems, internal disputes, sickness (Mary Livingstone died on 27 April 1862), and problems arising from the unsuitability of the steamship; despite reaching Murchison Falls, Lakes Shirwa and Nyassa and the Victoria Falls, further successes proved to be limited and the expedition was eventually curtailed in February 1864. Alongside numerous illustrations, this copy also contains a large folding map by the notable English cartographer John Arrowsmith (1790-1873). Gay 3034; Hosken, p. 126; South Africa Bibliography III, p. 137.

FIRST AMERICAN EDITION. With double-page frontispiece of the great cataracts of the Zambesi, 12 full-page plates, 1 large folding map and text illustrations throughout. Brown textured cloth, exterior slightly faded and rubbed, spine nicked; text is slightly toned but clean. First American edition of Livingstone's account of his Zambezi expedition to examine the natural resources of southeastern Africa and to determine the navigability of the Zambezi River. He explored the Shire River, a stream leading to Zambezi and discovered Lake Nyasa along with the Rovuma River and Lake Chilwa. The expedition met with many difficulties. The Zambezi turned out unnavigable past the Cabora Bassa rapids and in addition, he lost his wife Mary to malaria. Livingstone became greatly concerned with the slave trade while exploring Lake Nyasa He encountered marches of manacled slaves and with the entire countryside devasted by warring and slave raiding made a great impact on him. Nevertheless, some of the scientists on the expedition contributed collections of botanic, ecological, geological and ethnographic materials on their return home. David Livingstone (1813-1873) was one of the greatest of all African missionaries, explorers, and antislavery advocate. He made geographical discoveries for European knowledge, inspired abolitionists of the slave trade, revealed that the interior of the African continent was not an arid wasteland, and provided new incentives for European colonization of Africa.
