Nine works bound in eight. 4to. Publisher's linen backed drab boards, printed paper spine labels with replacements tipped in at the front of each volume, housed in four later plain black cloth slipcases. Sunning to the spines, some occasional spotting and edge wear to the boards, the spine labels a little creased and worn, otherwise an attractive set. A collection of Morris' works and translations printed using his own Golden type, designed for the Kelmscott Press. All of these works were all originally published prior to the founding of the press in 1891, this being the first time that they ever appeared in this font and in this uniform, utilitarian binding embodying Morris' aesthetic. They were issued at intervals between January 1901 and June 1902 without a uniform title. However a publisher's notice tipped into the front of the penultimate volume clearly indicates that they were originally conceived of as a set, though they are mostly seen individually these days. Walsdorf suggests that the production was limited to 300 sets. Walsdorf, 84.

Hardcover. Etat : Very Good. First edition thus. First one volume edition. Original blue/gray cloth with paper spine label. 8vo - 450, [2] pages. The paper label shows some minor wear. An additional page of ads for Mr. Morris's works is tipped in at the front. A very interesting association copy. Morris presents this signed copy at the half-title to John Barnes, and dates it Oct. 1888. John Barnes was an assistant to T. J. Cobden-Sanderson. At the recto of the front free endpaper is a holograph note in H. Buxton Forman's hand - "Note./ John Barnes, to whom this book was presented, was/ for many years shopman/ at 29 New Bond Street;/ and when Morris's books/ were published there by/ Ellis, the poet used to pre-/sent copies to Barnes &/ inscribe them. It is inter-/ esting to find that he still/ "remembered" Barnes after/ the change of publishers. With the book-plate of Buxton Forman to the front paste-down. One year earlier from this holograph, in 1887, the year this volume was published, Cobden-Sanderson gave a name to a new artistic expression - The Arts and Crafts movement by creating the Arts and Crafts Exhibition Society. The book presents very well indeed. The hinges show some weakness but overall the book remains solid. With this translation Morris was attempting to recreate the Odyssey in a somewhat Medieval style. Very Good.

Etat : Very Good. First Edition. Signed first edition of this translation, "ordinary" issue with price on spine label. Complete in two volumes. LeMire A-40.01. vii, [1], 230, [2, ads]; vii, [1], [231]-450 pp. Original paper-covered boards with spine labels printed in black. Very Good with thorough darkening to both volumes' spines, some light scratching and rubbing there as well; light stain to front board of Vol. II; corners a little bumped; contents bright and free of marks. Presentation copy signed by William Morris on the edge of the half-title, inscribed "to Eirkr Magnusson, with William Morris' best wishes." Magnusson was an Icelandic scholar and University of Cambridge librarian, who also had been Morris' teacher, and would be his friend and co-translator of a number of Scandanavian epics from 1869 to the close of the 19th century. A very nice association between the dynamo of the British Arts and Crafts movement and his mentor/muse in the art of translation.
