Fernandez: I am a man, held at the Museum fur Kunst und Kulturgeschichte der Stadt Dortmund, June 15-July 28, 1996. Includes bibliographical references (p. 135) . Subject: Fernandez, Benedict J. --Exhibitions --Documentary photography --Protest movements --Pictorial works. Summary: As early as 1968 Benedict J. Fernandez documented the confrontation between highly vocal minorities and the "quiet majority". A number of photographs from that time have been reproduced in this book. Here was a new phenomenon, even for late-1960s America: the confrontation with minorities who saw it as a part of their consitutional right to free speech of Benedict J. Fernandez's photographs contributed significantly to public awareness about this form of opposition. Benedict Joseph Fernandez prefers to call himself a "photo-anthropologist" rather than a "photojournalist" and has dedicated himself to the study of human experience. He seeks the individual image, avoiding the anonymous voyeurism of the classical "street photographer". 2 Kg.

Hardcover. Etat : New. As early as 1968 Benedict J. Fernandez documented the confrontation between highly vocal minorities and the "quiet majority". A number of photographs from that time have been reproduced in this book. Here was a new phenomenon, even for late-1960s America: the confrontation with minorities who saw it as a part of their constiturional right to free speech that the public would also listen to their views. Many of Benedict J. Fernandez s photographs contributed significantly to public awareness about this form of opposition. Without a doubt, Martin Luther King was the most important figure in the life of the young Ben Fernandez. He took every opportunity to be near the great leader, and thus it is not surprising at all that the photographs are the most impressive, warm-hearted and tender pictures to be found in this entire photographic work. This was 'edited' by Brigitte Buberl. A 1st edition, with its dustwrapper, in new condition. (136 pages).

Hardcover. Etat : New. Fernandez (b. 1936) was raised in Spanish Harlem and entered the world of photography with a prize-winning photo taken at a horse show in New Jersey. He honed his skills while working at the Design Laboratory 'a photography class conducted in the studios of famous photographers' and has worked for Magnum photo agency. His photographs cover the world of minorities within a majority culture: protests against racism, segregation, the Vietnam War, even the bikers' world and the society kept by the wealthy. Some of his photographs are well known, images of Martin Luther King shortly before his death and at his funeral and some have been featured in well-known publications. His latest work focuses on the search for his Puerto Rican roots. While Fernandez has mixed with photographers who are better known, he deserves to be better known internationally himself. The catalog of a traveling exhibition of his work, this collection of well-reproduced images should accomplish that. Though the essays are poorly translated, this is still recommended for photojournalism collections.
