A Hard Backed copy with Dust Jacket, both in Near Fine condition. Not Inscribed. 390 Pages.Maroon cloth boards with black title label to spine and gilt lettering. This book is one of 250 volumes in Everyman's Library which have been distributed to 45000 state schools throughout the United Kingom as a Millennium Project. This volume is Number 54. Turgenev's first literary masterpiece was an eloquent evocation of rural Russia in the mid-nineteenth century. A hunter wanders through steppe and forest in search of game, observing the beauty and vastness of the terrain, its pitiless climaste, and the harsh lives of its inhabitants. He meets a varied collection of peasants, landlords, bailiffs, overseers, horse-dealers, and merchants; he encounters eccentricity, nobility, brutality and cruelty; he witnesses feudal tyranny and the fatalistic submissions of those tyrannized. Celebrated for the charm of its style and for deftness of characterization, A Sportsman's Notebook was inspired not only by the nostalga for his native land of a writer in exile, but by his commitment to social and political change in the Russia of the Tsars. It may well have influenced Alexander 11's momentous decision to emancipate the serfs in 1861. There is an introduction by Max Egremont. This book is set in EHRHARDT. The precise origin of the typeface is unclear. Most of the founts were probably cut by the Hungarian punch-cutter Nicholas Kis for the Ehrhardt foundry in Leipzig, where they were left for sale in 1689. In 1938 the Monotype foundry produced the modern version.
