8vo, pp. 217. Original blue boards, lettered in gilt to spine. Illustrated dustwrapper. The lightest of wear to spine ends, otherwise a fine copy in a dustwrapper heavily reinforced with tape to reverse, and with a taped split to the spine. Dustwrapper design by Douglas Bisset. First edition, INSCRIBED BY THE AUTHOR TO HIS WIFE, INGRID GEIJER: 'To Ingrid, this is much the best book I ever wrote, even if others may not think so. It was written from the heart -- so I think that we must have written it together. Roger.' Roger Pilkington [1915-2003] was probably best known as the author of the Small Boat series, telling of his maritime trips through Europe. Ingrid Geijer was Pilkington's second wife; the couple did not marry until 1973. The inscription suggests the book was presented some time after its publication, but the exact story it tells is unknown. A poignant association.
