Many pages very good & clean, some with some water staining, some corner folding, some edge wear/nicks, some tiny holes, a few detached, lacks all pages volume 1 before page number 1 inc. title page, map& plate ii &contains 23 plates . contents Vol. 1. 263 pages + 9 page index + 7 single sided plates + plate no. I which is top 1/3 of page 1. Vol 2. Title page + plate I + 4 page list of plates + 3 page itinerary + Errata page + 274 page + appendix + 11 pages + 13 single sided plates + plate no. I which is top 1/3 of page 1. (so Vol 2 looks complete with the 14 plates). . Vol. 1 lacks title/pages before page 1/2, which is detached torn in three, edges damaged minor loss, page 3/4/5/6 detached with edge folding, nicks. page 7/8 detached, torn, edges damaged with loss of a couple of lines of text base to one page. Most pages clean, some folded corners, a number of pages with minor water staining, a few pages detached. Has 8 plates in vol 1, one about 1/3 of page & 7 full page, missing plate ii. Vol. 2 owner name/date to front endpage, most pages good, a couple of detached plates with edge damage, some staining to a few pages only & a few corner folds. A number with tiny corner holes. So to sum up; a 1798 reading copy only, with 22 plates (one hand coloured). Thomas Pennant (1726-1798), was a traveller and naturalist, and one of the finest naturalists of the 18th centuryFolio, Large Heavy volumes, so high surcharge for outside the U.K. Can be seen at fairs I attend in London, Norfolk or Long Melford. Printed by Henry Hughs, 1798; no additional printings indicated; Vol I: [frontis], [2], i-v, [vi-xvi], 263pp., [8 index] + nine plates as listed / Vol. II: [fold-out map], [2], [viii], 374pp. [13 appendix and index] + twelve plates; frontis and plate VII missing from Vol. II, plate IV caption differs from what is listed at front. Light foxing, wear to fold-out map at front of Vol. II. Both volumes rebound in modern green leather with marbled end pages and page edges. Bindings are tight, sturdy, and square; light-to-moderate amount of foxing to some pages and most plates, text and illustration very good otherwise; water staining at top margin of first few pages of Vol. I; plates have made faint impressions on facing pages. "This tireless naturalist and antiquary reached out to the ends of the world to gather in knowledge" (Cox). These are volumes one and two on India and Ceylon of an intended 14-volume series entitled "Outlines of the Globe." Welshman Pennant died in 1798, the year of publication, and only two more volumes (China and Japan) were published after his death, by his son. NOTE: Thomas Pennant was a Welsh naturalist and prolific travel writer. These four volumes were part of a projected fourteen volume work The Outline of the Globe but owing to the death of the author the work was never completed. Vol. IV covering Australia (New Holland) and the South East Asia Archipelago is particularly rare.
